EFFECT OF DIETARY-LIPID ON LUTEIN METABOLISM DURING AFLATOXICOSIS IN YOUNG BROILER-CHICKENS

POULTRY SCIENCE, 69(1), 53–59.

By: J. Schaeffer n & P. Hamilton n

MeSH headings : Absorption; Aflatoxins / poisoning; Animals; Chickens; Dietary Fats / metabolism; Fatty Acids / administration & dosage; Fatty Acids / metabolism; Lutein / metabolism; Male; Mycotoxicosis / metabolism; Poultry Diseases / chemically induced; Poultry Diseases / metabolism; Random Allocation
TL;DR: Serum lutein and its metabolite, 3'-oxolutein, increased with increasing dietary fat until it reached a plateau at 6% fat, while Aflatoxin significantly (P less than .05) depressed the absorption of lute in regardless of the fatty acid present. (via Semantic Scholar)

Aflatoxin-Impaired Ability to Accumulate Oxycarotenoid Pigments During Restoration in Young Chickens

Poultry Science, 67(4), 619–625.

By: J. Schaeffer n, J. Tyczkowski n, J. Riviere n & P. Hamilton n

MeSH headings : Aflatoxins / pharmacology; Animals; Carotenoids / metabolism; Chickens / metabolism; Male; Pigmentation Disorders / chemically induced; Pigmentation Disorders / metabolism; Pigmentation Disorders / veterinary; Poultry Diseases / chemically induced; Poultry Diseases / metabolism; Skin Pigmentation / drug effects
TL;DR: The mechanism by which aflatoxin causes paling in chickens was investigated by measuring its effect on the restoration of pigments in 3-wk-old birds made pale by feeding a white corn-soy diet, which implied that the normal accumulation of lutein from the diet proceeded into and through the mucosa to the serum to depot sites in the liver and integument.
