ALTERED METABOLISM OF CAROTENOIDS DURING PALE-BIRD SYNDROME IN CHICKENS INFECTED WITH EIMERIA-ACERVULINA

POULTRY SCIENCE, 70(10), 2074–2081.

By: J. Tyczkowski n, P. Hamilton n & M. Ruff*

author keywords: EIMERIA-ACERVULINA; LUTEIN; MALABSORPTION; CAROTENOIDS; EXCRETION
MeSH headings : Animals; Canthaxanthin / analysis; Canthaxanthin / blood; Canthaxanthin / metabolism; Carotenoids / blood; Carotenoids / metabolism; Chickens; Chromatography, High Pressure Liquid; Coccidiosis / complications; Coccidiosis / metabolism; Coccidiosis / veterinary; Eimeria; Humans; Intestinal Absorption; Liver / chemistry; Lutein / analysis; Lutein / blood; Lutein / metabolism; Malabsorption Syndromes / etiology; Malabsorption Syndromes / metabolism; Malabsorption Syndromes / veterinary; Male; Pigmentation Disorders / etiology; Pigmentation Disorders / metabolism; Pigmentation Disorders / veterinary; Poultry Diseases / metabolism; Skin / chemistry; Syndrome; Toes; Zea mays
TL;DR: The pale-bird syndrome caused by E. acervulina appeared to be the result of a loss of previously absorbed carotenoids coupled with drastic malabsorption of dietary carotanoids. (via Semantic Scholar)

MEASUREMENT OF MALABSORPTION OF CAROTENOIDS IN CHICKENS WITH PALE-BIRD SYNDROME

POULTRY SCIENCE, 70(11), 2275–2279.

By: J. Tyczkowski n, J. Schaeffer n & P. Hamilton n

author keywords: MEASUREMENT OF MALABSORPTION; CAROTENOIDS; PALE-BIRD SYNDROME; AFLATOXIN; MALDEPOSITION
MeSH headings : Aflatoxins / adverse effects; Animals; Canthaxanthin / blood; Canthaxanthin / pharmacokinetics; Carotenoids / analogs & derivatives; Carotenoids / blood; Carotenoids / pharmacokinetics; Chickens; Intestinal Absorption; Lutein / blood; Malabsorption Syndromes / complications; Malabsorption Syndromes / diagnosis; Malabsorption Syndromes / veterinary; Male; Mycotoxicosis / complications; Mycotoxicosis / veterinary; Poultry Diseases / diagnosis; Xanthophylls; Zeaxanthins; beta Carotene / analogs & derivatives
TL;DR: Because pale-bird syndrome (PBS), defined as the failure of birds to realize the color potential of their diet, has been demonstrated to be caused by mal absorption or by hyperexcretion of carotenoids, a method for measuring malabsorption of carOTenoids would be useful. Aflatoxin-Impaired Ability to Accumulate Oxycarotenoid Pigments During Restoration in Young Chickens

Poultry Science, 67(4), 619–625.

By: J. Schaeffer n, J. Tyczkowski n, J. Riviere n & P. Hamilton n

MeSH headings : Aflatoxins / pharmacology; Animals; Carotenoids / metabolism; Chickens / metabolism; Male; Pigmentation Disorders / chemically induced; Pigmentation Disorders / metabolism; Pigmentation Disorders / veterinary; Poultry Diseases / chemically induced; Poultry Diseases / metabolism; Skin Pigmentation / drug effects
TL;DR: The mechanism by which aflatoxin causes paling in chickens was investigated by measuring its effect on the restoration of pigments in 3-wk-old birds made pale by feeding a white corn-soy diet, which implied that the normal accumulation of lutein from the diet proceeded into and through the mucosa to the serum to depot sites in the liver and integument.
