Dietary iron deficiency compromises normal development of elastic fibers in the aorta and lungs of chicks

JOURNAL OF NUTRITION, 137(8), 1895–1900.

By: C. Hill n, C. Ashwell*, S. Nolin n, F. Keeley*, C. Billingham*, A. Hinek*, B. Starcher*

MeSH headings : Animal Feed / analysis; Animals; Aorta / drug effects; Aorta / growth & development; Aorta / ultrastructure; Body Weight / drug effects; Chickens / metabolism; Diet; Elastic Tissue / drug effects; Elastic Tissue / growth & development; Iron Deficiencies; Iron, Dietary / administration & dosage; Iron, Dietary / metabolism; Lung / drug effects; Lung / growth & development; Lung / ultrastructure
TL;DR: The studies indicate that iron deficiency had a pronounced negative effect on elastic fiber development and suggests that fibrillin may have an important role in this pathology. (via Semantic Scholar)

Elastin defects in the lungs of avian and murine models of homocysteinemia

EXPERIMENTAL LUNG RESEARCH, 31(9-10), 873–885.

By: B. Starcher* & C. Hill n

author keywords: elastin; homocysteinemia; methionine
MeSH headings : Animals; Chickens; Elastin / analysis; Elastin / physiology; Female; Homocysteine / blood; Lung / chemistry; Lung / pathology; Methionine / administration & dosage; Methionine / blood; Methionine / urine; Mice; Pregnancy
TL;DR: The studies show that continuous exposure of the developing lung to high circulating levels of methionine/homocysteine can result in major disruptions of elastic fibers and lung architecture, however, young mammals such as the mouse are protected from extended lung pathology because toxic levels of Methionine are not transferred through the mothers milk. Multiple roles for elastic fibers in the skin

JOURNAL OF HISTOCHEMISTRY & CYTOCHEMISTRY, 53(4), 431–443.

By: B. Starcher*, R. Aycock* & C. Hill n

author keywords: elastic fibers; skin; follicle
MeSH headings : Animals; Chickens; Elastic Tissue / physiology; Elastic Tissue / ultrastructure; Elastin / metabolism; Feathers / physiology; Feathers / ultrastructure; Hair Follicle / physiology; Hair Follicle / ultrastructure; Humans; Mammals; Skin / metabolism; Skin / ultrastructure; Skin Physiological Phenomena; Species Specificity
TL;DR: The data suggest that the primary role for elastic fibers in animals, with the possible exception of humans, is movement and/or placement of feathers or hair. (via Semantic Scholar)

Effect of intermittent feed deprivation on plasma insulin-like growth factor-1 and tibial dyschondroplasia in broiler chicks

International Journal of Poultry Science, 1(1), 22.

By: K. Roberson*, C. Hill* & P. Ferket*

TL;DR: The results indicate that feed deprivation for eight hours at various daily intervals will attenuate the incidence of TD in birds fed a Ca:aP ratio of 2:1. (via Semantic Scholar)

Antibody raised to AKAAAKAAAKA sequence on tropoelastin recognizes tropoelastin but not mature crosslinked elastin: A new tool in metabolic and structural studies of elastogenesis

CONNECTIVE TISSUE RESEARCH, 40(4), 273-+.

By: B. Starcher*, N. Conrad*, A. Hinek* & C. Hill n

author keywords: tropoelastin; antibody; immunochemistry; copper deficiency
MeSH headings : Animals; Antibodies / immunology; Antibody Specificity / immunology; Aorta / metabolism; Cattle; Cells, Cultured; Chickens; Copper; Cross-Linking Reagents; Elastin / immunology; Humans; Peptides / immunology; Sheep; Tropoelastin / immunology
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that this new anti-tropoelastin antibody can be used as a useful tool to investigate elastin metabolism where it is important to distinguish between tropoelASTin and mature crosslinked elASTin. (via Semantic Scholar)
