Crimson: A novel sex-linked eye color mutant of Culex pipiens L. (Diptera : Culicidae)

JOURNAL OF MEDICAL ENTOMOLOGY, 41(3), 385–391.

By: J. Rasgon n & T. Scott n

author keywords: Culex pipiens; eye color mutant; ommochrome; 3-hydroxykynurenine; xanthommatin
MeSH headings : Aging; Animals; Crosses, Genetic; Culex / genetics; Eye / cytology; Eye Color / genetics; Female; Homozygote; Male; Mutation; Phenotype; Tryptophan Oxygenase / genetics
TL;DR: Two possible mechanisms for the crimson mutation are suggested: (1) transport of 3HK into the pigment cells and/or pigment granules is slow, with normal oxidation of 3 HK into xanthommatin, or (2) 3HK is transported normally into pigment cells/granules but is not immediately oxidized to xanthomatin, resulting in 3HK hyper-accumulation and slow nonenzymatic production of xanthamatin after adult emergence. Model system for plant cell biology: GFP imaging in living onion epidermal cells

BIOTECHNIQUES, 26(6), 1125-+.

By: A. Scott n, S. Wyatt n, P. Tsou n, D. Robertson n & N. Allen n

MeSH headings : Cloning, Molecular; Gene Expression Regulation, Plant; Green Fluorescent Proteins; Indicators and Reagents; Luminescent Proteins; Models, Biological; Onions / cytology; Onions / genetics; Organelles / physiology; Plant Proteins / genetics; Staining and Labeling / methods; Transformation, Genetic
TL;DR: This paper presents a rapid transient expression system using onion epidermal peels, which allows for testing of new GFP fusion proteins in a living tissue to determine deleterious effects and the ability to express before stable transformants are attempted. (via Semantic Scholar)
