Identification of gender and reproductive maturity in the absence of gonads: muscle tissue levels of sex steroids and vitellogenin in gag (Mycteroperca microlepis)

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 57(1), 148–159.

By: S. Heppell* & C. Sullivan*

TL;DR: Sensitive immunoassays were utilized to measure levels of the sex steroids estradiol-17beta (E2), testosterone (T), and 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) and the egg-yolk precursor vitellogenin (VTG) in gag on a quarterly basis and found that males were significantly higher in males than in adult females or immature fish. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of vitellogenin in temperate basses (Genus Morone): Plasma and in vitro analyses

TRANSACTIONS OF THE AMERICAN FISHERIES SOCIETY, 128(3), 532–541.

By: S. Heppell*, L. Jackson, G. Weber* & C. Sullivan*

TL;DR: Blood levels of the egg yolk precursor vitellogenin (VTG) can be used as a definitive marker for the onset and progress of maturation in female teleosts and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to measure VTG in blood plasma from three species of temperate basses. COMPARATIVE BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHYSIOLOGY C-TOXICOLOGY & PHARMACOLOGY, 123(2), 113–125.

author keywords: enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA); fathead minnow; vitellogenin; estrogenic compounds; 17 beta-estradiol; toxicology; reproduction; ovary
MeSH headings : Amino Acid Sequence; Animals; Blotting, Western; Chromatography, Ion Exchange; Cyprinidae; Environmental Monitoring; Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay / methods; Estrogens / analysis; Male; Molecular Sequence Data; Reproducibility of Results; Vitellogenins / biosynthesis; Vitellogenins / chemistry; Vitellogenins / isolation & purification
TL;DR: The VTG ELISA could be useful for the detection of estrogenic properties associated with certain compounds and could be easily incorporated into standard laboratory toxicity assays using this species. (via Semantic Scholar)

EVALUATING MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVES FOR RED-COCKADED WOODPECKERS - A MODELING APPROACH

JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, 58(3), 479–487.

By: S. Heppell*, . Walters & L. Crowder

author keywords: COOPERATIVE BREEDER; ENDANGERED SPECIES; MATRIX MODEL; NORTH-CAROLINA; PICOIDES-BOREALIS, RED-COCKADED WOODPECKER
TL;DR: A male-only, stage-based matrix model is presented to assess potential effects of various management techniques used to enhance red-cockaded woodpecker populations and predicts the population-level effects of 5 proposed management techniques that affect stage-specific survival, growth, and fecundity.
