Investigation of sensory thresholds in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with and without Chiari-like malformations and syringomyelia

Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 32(6), 2021–2028.

By: C. Sparks n, A. Gorney n, K. Williams n, E. Griffith n, S. Cerda-Gonzalez*, B. Lascelles n, N. Olby n

author keywords: neuropathic pain; paresthesia; phantom scratch; syrinx
MeSH headings : Animals; Brain / diagnostic imaging; Brain / physiopathology; Budd-Chiari Syndrome / diagnostic imaging; Budd-Chiari Syndrome / physiopathology; Budd-Chiari Syndrome / veterinary; Case-Control Studies; Dog Diseases / diagnostic imaging; Dog Diseases / physiopathology; Dogs; Female; Hypesthesia / physiopathology; Hypesthesia / veterinary; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / veterinary; Male; Neuroimaging / veterinary; Sensory Thresholds / physiology; Syringomyelia / diagnostic imaging; Syringomyelia / physiopathology; Syringomyelia / veterinary
TL;DR: Mechanical and thermal sensitivity does not appear to be related to the presence of SM, but mechanical sensitivity appears to berelated to the existence of pain and clinical signs. (via Semantic Scholar)

By: S. Cerda-Gonzalez*, N. Olby n, S. McCullough*, A. Pease n, R. Broadstone* & J. Osborne n

author keywords: chiari-like; occipital hypoplasia; syringomyelia; MRI
MeSH headings : Animals; Arnold-Chiari Malformation / diagnosis; Arnold-Chiari Malformation / genetics; Arnold-Chiari Malformation / pathology; Arnold-Chiari Malformation / veterinary; Atlanto-Axial Joint / pathology; Atlanto-Occipital Joint / pathology; Breeding; Dog Diseases / diagnosis; Dog Diseases / genetics; Dog Diseases / pathology; Dogs; Female; Foramen Magnum / abnormalities; Foramen Magnum / anatomy & histology; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / methods; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / veterinary; Male; Syndrome; Syringomyelia / diagnosis; Syringomyelia / genetics; Syringomyelia / pathology; Syringomyelia / veterinary
TL;DR: While several factors are associated with the presence of neurologic signs, occipital hypoplasia appears to be the most important factor. (via Semantic Scholar)

Fecal incontinence associated with epidural spinal hematoma and intervertebral disk extrusion in a dog

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 228(2), 230–235.

By: S. Cerda-Gonzalez n & N. Olby*

MeSH headings : Animals; Dog Diseases / diagnosis; Dog Diseases / diagnostic imaging; Dog Diseases / surgery; Dogs; Fecal Incontinence / etiology; Fecal Incontinence / veterinary; Hematoma, Epidural, Spinal / diagnosis; Hematoma, Epidural, Spinal / diagnostic imaging; Hematoma, Epidural, Spinal / surgery; Hematoma, Epidural, Spinal / veterinary; Intervertebral Disc Displacement / diagnosis; Intervertebral Disc Displacement / diagnostic imaging; Intervertebral Disc Displacement / surgery; Intervertebral Disc Displacement / veterinary; Lameness, Animal / etiology; Lameness, Animal / surgery; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / veterinary; Male; Radionuclide Imaging; Treatment Outcome
TL;DR: Thoracolumbar spinal cord injuries can result in upper motor neuron fecal incontinence in ambulatory dogs and Epidural spinal hematomas may develop secondary to intervertebral disk herniations and cause spinal cord compression resulting in neurologic deficits. (via Semantic Scholar)

Value of a single-shot turbo spin-echo pulse sequence for assessing the architecture of the subarachnoid space and the constitutive nature of cerebrospinal fluid

VETERINARY RADIOLOGY & ULTRASOUND, 47(3), 254–259.

By: A. Pease n, S. Sullivan n, N. Olby n, H. Galano n, S. Cerda-Gonzalez n, I. Robertson n, P. Gavin*, D. Thrall n

author keywords: cervical; half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo; magnetic resonance imaging; myelogram; shot turbo spin echo
MeSH headings : Animals; Cat Diseases / cerebrospinal fluid; Cat Diseases / pathology; Cats; Diagnosis, Differential; Dog Diseases / cerebrospinal fluid; Dog Diseases / pathology; Dogs; Encephalitis / complications; Encephalitis / pathology; Encephalitis / veterinary; Female; Lameness, Animal / etiology; Lumbar Vertebrae / pathology; Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin / complications; Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin / pathology; Lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin / veterinary; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / methods; Magnetic Resonance Imaging / veterinary; Male; Spinal Cord Neoplasms / complications; Spinal Cord Neoplasms / pathology; Spinal Cord Neoplasms / veterinary; Subarachnoid Space / pathology
TL;DR: Although the resolution of the single-shot turbo spin-echo pulse sequence images is relatively poor compared with more conventional sequences, the qualitative information about the subarachnoid space and cerebrospinal fluid and the rapid acquisition time, make it a useful sequence to include in standard protocols of spinal magnetic resonance imaging.
