ENVIRONMENTAL OCCURRENCE AND REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS OF THE PHARMACEUTICAL FLUOXETINE IN NATIVE FRESHWATER MUSSELS

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY, 29(6), 1311–1318.

By: R. Bringolf*, R. Heltsley*, T. Newton*, C. Eads n, S. Fraley*, D. Shea n, W. Cope n

Contributors: R. Bringolf*, R. Heltsley*, T. Newton*, C. Eads n, S. Fraley*, D. Shea n, W. Cope n

author keywords: Unionidae; Pharmaceutical; Glochidia; Behavior; Prozac
MeSH headings : Animals; Bivalvia / drug effects; Bivalvia / growth & development; Female; Fluoxetine / analysis; Fluoxetine / pharmacokinetics; Fluoxetine / toxicity; Male; Reproduction / drug effects; Tissue Distribution; Water Pollutants, Chemical / analysis; Water Pollutants, Chemical / pharmacokinetics; Water Pollutants, Chemical / toxicity
TL;DR: The results suggest that fluoxetine accumulates in mussel tissue and has the potential to disrupt several aspects of reproduction in freshwater mussels, a faunal group recognized as one of the most imperiled in the world. (via Semantic Scholar)

Fish Hosts of the Carolina Heelsplitter (Lasmigona decorata), a Federally Endangered Freshwater Mussel (Bivalvia: Unionidae)

American Malacological Bulletin, 28(1-2), 151–158.

By: C. Eads*, R. Bringolf*, R. Greiner, A. Bogan* & J. Levine*

author keywords: Cyprinidae; glochidia; serotonin; conglutinate; Unionidae
TL;DR: Two laboratory trials were conducted to determine the required host fish for the Carolina heelsplitter (Lasmigona decorata (Lea, 1852)), an endangered freshwater mussel (Unionidae), and differences in transformation success were observed between the two basins on these species. 2007 journal article

Acute and chronic toxicity of technical-grade pesticides to glochidia and juveniles of freshwater mussels (Unionidae)

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY, 26(10), 2086–2093.

By: R. Bringolf n, W. Cope n, C. Eads n, P. Lazaro n, M. Barnhart* & D. Shea n

Contributors: R. Bringolf n, W. Cope n, C. Eads n, P. Lazaro n, M. Barnhart* & D. Shea n

author keywords: herbicides; insecticides; fungicides; early life stage; sodium chloride
MeSH headings : Animals; Bivalvia / drug effects; Bivalvia / growth & development; Fresh Water; Larva / drug effects; Pesticides / toxicity; Water Pollutants, Chemical / toxicity
TL;DR: The relative risk associated with acute exposure of early life stages of mussels to technical‐grade atrazine, pendimethalin, fipronil, and permethrin is likely low; however, survival and growth results with juvenile L. siliquoidea indicate that chronic exposure to high concentrations (≥3.8 mg/L) of atrazin may have the potential to impact mussel populations and warrants further investigation. Status and life-history aspects of Villosa constricta (Conrad 1838) (Notched Rainbow), in the upper Neuse River Basin, North Carolina

SOUTHEASTERN NATURALIST, 5(4), 649–660.

By: C. Eads*, A. Bogan* & J. Levine*

TL;DR: Stream-survey data, length-at-age study, and host-fish determination for Villosa constricta (notched rainbow) were reported, and lab trials determined that Etheostoma flabellare (fantail darter) served as a suitable host for this species. (via Semantic Scholar)
