JOURNAL OF BIOMEDICAL MATERIALS RESEARCH PART B-APPLIED BIOMATERIALS, 100B(2), 553–561.

By: X. Bai n, S. Sandukas n, M. Appleford*, J. Ong* & A. Rabiei n

author keywords: hydroxyapatite coatings; antimicrobial; antibacterial effect; cytotoxicity
MeSH headings : Anti-Bacterial Agents / chemistry; Anti-Bacterial Agents / pharmacology; Cell Line; Coated Materials, Biocompatible; Durapatite / chemistry; Durapatite / pharmacology; Humans; Materials Testing; Osteoblasts / cytology; Osteoblasts / metabolism; Silver / chemistry; Silver / pharmacology; Staphylococcus aureus / growth & development; Titanium / chemistry; Titanium / pharmacology
TL;DR: Considering both the antibacterial and cytotoxicity effects, it is suggested that the 3 wt % of Ag in FGHA coatings can be favorable. (via Semantic Scholar)

Functionally graded hydroxyapatite coatings doped with antibacterial components

ACTA BIOMATERIALIA, 6(6), 2264–2273.

By: X. Bai n, K. More*, C. Rouleau* & A. Rabiei n

author keywords: Ion beam processing; Hydroxyapatite coating; Adhesion strength; Antimicrobial
MeSH headings : Anti-Bacterial Agents / chemistry; Cell Culture Techniques / methods; Coated Materials, Biocompatible / chemistry; Crystallization / methods; Durapatite / chemistry; Extracellular Matrix / chemistry; Materials Testing; Surface Properties; Tissue Engineering / methods
TL;DR: A series of functionally graded hydroxyapatite (FGHA) coatings incorporated with various percentages of silver were deposited on titanium substrates using ion beam-assisted deposition and optical observations of failed areas illustrated that the dominant failure mechanism was epoxy failure, and FGHA coating delamination was not observed. ACTA BIOMATERIALIA, 5(9), 3563–3572.

By: X. Bai n, S. Sandukas n, M. Appleford*, J. Ong* & A. Rabiei n

author keywords: Calcium phosphate coatings; Biomedical implants; Bioactivity; Adhesion strength
MeSH headings : Animals; Calcium Phosphates / chemistry; Cells, Cultured; Coated Materials, Biocompatible / chemistry; Humans; Materials Testing; Microscopy, Atomic Force; Microscopy, Electron, Transmission; Spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared; Stress, Mechanical; Surface Properties; Titanium / chemistry; X-Ray Diffraction
TL;DR: The adhesion strength results helped us to identify the best setup for substrate temperature and processing parameters to begin the deposition, the culture test and XPS results helped identifying the optimum parameters for the last stage of deposition. (via Semantic Scholar)

Effect of substrate temperature on mechanical properties of calcium phosphate coatings

JOURNAL OF BIOMEDICAL MATERIALS RESEARCH PART B-APPLIED BIOMATERIALS, 85B(1), 60–67.

By: T. Blalock n, X. Bai n, R. Narayan n & A. Rabiei n

MeSH headings : Adhesiveness; Calcium Phosphates / chemistry; Coated Materials, Biocompatible / chemistry; Durapatite / chemistry; Materials Testing; Surface Properties; Temperature; Titanium / chemistry
TL;DR: It is concluded that depositing FGHA coatings would better be started at 550-650 degrees C to maintain superior properties of the film at the interface and the residual stresses caused by different Coefficient of Thermal Expansions between the substrate and coatings are not the only factor controlling the bonding strength and mechanical properties of these samples.
