Ahmed El-Shafei, a Professor in the Polymer and Color Chemistry Program at North Carolina State University, joined the faculty in 2008 after 5-year of conducting research as a Research Assistant Professor at NC State in different chemistry areas with a focus towards functional dyes including dye-sensitized solar cells, photodynamic therapy, and molecular modeling of photostability, photophysics, thermal and photodegradation mechanisms of dyes and polymers. He received a B.S. (1989) with honors and a M.Sc. (1994) in Organic Chemistry both from Mansoura University, Egypt, and a Co-Major Ph.D. (2002) in Chemistry and Fiber and Polymer Science from North Carolina State University. El-Shafei’s current research interests span molecular engineering, molecular modeling (DFT/TD-DFT), synthesis, photophysics, electrochemistry and photovoltaic properties of dyes for dyes-sensitized solar cells and PDT. The second research area of interest in El-Shafei’s group focuses on sustainable dyeing and finishing, the synthesis and nanolayer graft polymerization of different monomer functionalities using atmospheric plasma (waterless) for different end uses including woven, non-wovens and knitted fabrics for fuel filtration, medical applications and flame retardancy. Another research thrust of El-Shafei is on molecular modeling of weathering of dyes and polymers, synthesis and characterization of thermochromic and photochromic dyes, and dyes for ink-jet printing.
