The Effect of Illumination and Time of Day on Movements of Bobcats (Lynx rufus)

PLoS ONE, 8(7), e69213.

By: A. Rockhill n, C. DePerno n & R. Powell n

Ed(s): M. Somers

MeSH headings : Animals; Female; Lighting; Lynx / physiology; Male; Moon; Movement / physiology; North Carolina; Time Factors; Wetlands
TL;DR: Bobcats had highest movement rates during daytime when nighttime illumination was low (new moon) and higher movement rates During nighttime when lunar illumination was high (full moon), consistent with prey availability being affected by light level and by limited vision by bobcats during darkness. A COMPARISON OF TWO FIELD CHEMICAL IMMOBILIZATION TECHNIQUES FOR BOBCATS (LYNX RUFUS)

JOURNAL OF ZOO AND WILDLIFE MEDICINE, 42(4), 580–585.

By: A. Rockhill*, S. Chinnadurai*, R. Powell* & C. DePerno*

author keywords: Anesthesia; bobcat; induction rate; ketamine; Lynx rufus; recovery rate
MeSH headings : Analgesics, Opioid / administration & dosage; Analgesics, Opioid / pharmacology; Anesthetics, Dissociative / administration & dosage; Anesthetics, Dissociative / pharmacology; Animals; Animals, Wild; Body Temperature / drug effects; Butorphanol / administration & dosage; Butorphanol / pharmacology; Drug Therapy, Combination; Female; Heart Rate / drug effects; Hypnotics and Sedatives / administration & dosage; Hypnotics and Sedatives / pharmacology; Immobilization / veterinary; Ketamine / administration & dosage; Ketamine / pharmacology; Lynx; Male; Medetomidine / administration & dosage; Medetomidine / pharmacology; Oxygen / blood; Respiratory Rate / drug effects
TL;DR: Though both protocols provided safe and reliable sedation, the benefits of using medetomidine and butorphanol to lower ketamine doses and decrease processing time for brief nonsurgical sedation of bobcats in the field are presented. (via Semantic Scholar)

Evaluating the Effect of Predators on White-Tailed Deer: Movement and Diet of Coyotes

JOURNAL OF WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT, 75(4), 905–912.

By: M. Turner n, A. Rockhill n, C. Deperno n, J. Jenks*, R. Klaver*, A. Jarding*, T. Grovenburg*, K. Pollock n

author keywords: Canis latrans; coyotes; habitat selection; Minnesota; Odocoileus virginianus; white-tailed deer
TL;DR: It is suggested that coyote predation was not likely limiting white-tailed deer populations in southeast Minnesota, because coyote movement and diet vary by region, local data are important to understand coyote population dynamics and their impact on prey species. (via Semantic Scholar)
