Assessment of the directional elastic moduli of ewe vertebral cancellous bone by vibrational testing

ANNALS OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, 27(1), 103–110.

By: P. Weinhold n, S. Roe n, J. Gilbert* & C. Abrams n

author keywords: postmenopausal osteoporosis; mechanical properties; nondestructive testing; animal model; cellular solid; anisotropy; honeycomb
MeSH headings : Animals; Disease Models, Animal; Elasticity; Female; Humans; Lumbar Vertebrae / pathology; Lumbar Vertebrae / physiology; Lumbar Vertebrae / ultrastructure; Microscopy, Electron, Scanning; Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal / pathology; Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal / physiopathology; Ovariectomy; Sheep; Stress, Mechanical; Vibration
TL;DR: It is found that ewe vertebral cancellous bone has similar physical and mechanical properties to humans and the vibrational testing method described was able to nondestructively provide a valid measure of stiffness that was correlated with stiffness estimates from traditional compression testing. Axial vibration of threaded external fixation pins: Detection of pin loosening

ANNALS OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING, 26(3), 361–368.

By: M. Kay n, S. Roe n, L. Stikeleather n, A. Mahmoud n & C. Abrams n

author keywords: vibration; external fixation pin; interface; loosening; nondestructive
MeSH headings : Animals; Bone Nails; Bone and Bones / pathology; Dogs; External Fixators; Osteolysis / diagnosis; Vibration
TL;DR: Frequency and quasistatic tests of dissected pin–bone structures revealed a good correlation between natural frequency and pin-bone interface stiffness, and the measurement of natural frequency was more sensitive to bone structure changes at the pin–bones interface than low-load quasi-static stiffness. Placement of screws in the sustentaculum tali: A calcaneal fracture model

Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 352(1998 July), 194–201.

By: P. Lin*, S. Roe n, M. Kay n, C. Abrams n & A. Jones*

TL;DR: A new cadaveric model of calcaneus fractures was developed, using a combination of osteotomies and impaction, and it was concluded that the position of the articular fragment of comminuted calcaneal fractures will be maintained at higher loads when the screws in the posterior facet are incorporated into the lateral plate. Proximal tibiotarsal cancellous bone mechanical properties in broilers

Transactions of the ASAE, 40(5), 1469–1473.

By: S. Capps, R. Bottcher*, C. Abrams & S. Scheideler

TL;DR: Body weights increased as age increased, regardless of other factors, and a reduction in strength, elastic modulus, and resilience was seen at nine weeks of age. (via Semantic Scholar)
