Replicate Studies Separated by 40 Years Reveal Changes in the Altitudinal Stratification of Montane Passalid Beetle Species (Passalidae) in Mesoamerica

DIVERSITY-BASEL, 15(3).

By: C. Beza-Beza n, C. Rivera*, D. Pons*, D. McKenna* & J. Schuster*

author keywords: altitudinal gradients; endemism; Atitlan volcano; Santa Maria volcano; Mesoamerican humid montane forest
TL;DR: Two key observations are consistent with a shift of the passalid beetle community to higher elevations, perhaps in response to changes in local climate/habitat conditions, including increased temperatures and changes in forest composition. (via Semantic Scholar)

Wood fibers are a crucial microhabitat for cellulose- and xylan- degrading bacteria in the hindgut of the wood-feeding beetle Odontotaenius disjunctus

FRONTIERS IN MICROBIOLOGY, 14.

By: M. Schwarz n, C. Beza-Beza n & A. Mikaelyan n

author keywords: beetles; Passalidae; lignocellulose; symbiotic digestion; gut microbiomes
TL;DR: This study investigated the bacterial communities specifically associated with wood fibers in the gut of the passalid beetle Odontotaenius disjunctus and demonstrated that the anterior hindgut, which houses a majority of the bacterial load, is an important site for lignocellulose digestion.
