Using Innovative Outliers to Detect Discrete Shifts in Dynamics in Group-Based State-Space Models

MULTIVARIATE BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH, 44(4), 465–496.

By: S. Chow, E. Hamaker* & J. Allaire n

TL;DR: This work extends De Jong and Penzer's 1998 approach for representing outliers in single-subject state-space models to a group-based framework and indicates that a subset of older adults showed sudden shifts in learning dynamics in several forms, including sudden jumps in level, slope, and linkage between perceived control and actual performance level. An Examination of Dedifferentiation in Cognition Among African–American Older Adults

Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology, 24(2), 193–208.

By: R. Sims*, J. Allaire n, A. Gamaldo n, C. Edwards* & K. Whitfield*

MeSH headings : Black or African American / psychology; Aged; Aged, 80 and over; Aging / psychology; Baltimore; Cognition / physiology; Female; Humans; Interviews as Topic; Male; Middle Aged; Psychometrics
TL;DR: The results suggest that a pattern of dedifferentiation of cognitive abilities does not exist within this sample of older African Americans and that the 60–69 year age range may be a critical period for cognitive decline in this population. (via Semantic Scholar)

JOURNALS OF GERONTOLOGY SERIES B-PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, 63(5), P301–P308.

By: K. Whitfield*, J. Allaire n, R. Belue* & C. Edwards*

author keywords: ethnicity; minorities; racial comparisons; models of group differences; statistical power

TL;DR: It is proposed that simple comparisons between groups are neither necessary nor sufficient to advance the understanding of ethnic minorities, and the use of multiple methodological designs in the study of issues related to racial and ethnic minorities is encouraged by demonstrating some of the advantages of lesser employed approaches.
