Spontaneously Induced Prophages in Lactobacillus gasseri Contribute to Horizontal Gene Transfer

APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, 80(11), 3508–3517.

By: J. Baugher n, E. Durmaz n & T. Klaenhammer n

MeSH headings : Bacteriophages / genetics; Bacteriophages / isolation & purification; Bacteriophages / physiology; DNA, Viral / chemistry; DNA, Viral / genetics; Gene Transfer, Horizontal; Host Specificity; Lactobacillus / virology; Molecular Sequence Data; Plasmids; Prophages / genetics; Prophages / isolation & purification; Prophages / physiology; Sequence Analysis, DNA; Transduction, Genetic; Virus Activation
TL;DR: The common occurrence of multiple prophages in L. gasseri genomes, their propensity for spontaneous induction, and the high degree of homology among phages within multiple species of Lactobacillus suggest that temperate bacteriophages likely contribute to horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in commensal lactobacilli. Invited review: Application of omics tools to understanding probiotic functionality

[Review of ]. JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE, 94(10), 4753–4765.

By: J. Baugher n & T. Klaenhammer n

author keywords: probiotics; omics; function; mechanism
MeSH headings : Bacterial Physiological Phenomena; Computational Biology; Humans; Intestines / microbiology; Probiotics / metabolism
TL;DR: The ability to examine fully sequenced and annotated genomes has greatly accelerated the application of genetic approaches to elucidate many important functional roles of probiotic microbes. (via Semantic Scholar)
