2017 journal article

Preparation, characterization and in vitro response of bioactive coatings on polyether ether ketone

JOURNAL OF BIOMEDICAL MATERIALS RESEARCH PART B-APPLIED BIOMATERIALS, 105(3), 560–567.

By: J. Durham n, M. Allen* & A. Rabiei n

author keywords: bioactive coatings; hydroxyapatite; PEEK; physical vapor deposition; crystallinity
MeSH headings : Animals; Benzophenones; Cell Line; Coated Materials, Biocompatible / chemistry; Coated Materials, Biocompatible / pharmacology; Durapatite / chemistry; Durapatite / pharmacology; Ketones / chemistry; Ketones / pharmacology; Materials Testing; Mice; Osteoblasts / metabolism; Polyethylene Glycols / chemistry; Polyethylene Glycols / pharmacology; Polymers; Yttrium / chemistry; Yttrium / pharmacology; Zirconium / chemistry; Zirconium / pharmacology
TL;DR: PEEK was coated via ion-beam-assisted deposition using a two-layer design of yttria-stabilized zirconia as a heat-protection layer, and hydroxyapatite as a top layer to improve osseointegration and was found to be amorphous and free of porosities in its as-deposited state. 2016 journal article

Deposition, heat treatment and characterization of two layer bioactive coatings on cylindrical PEEK

SURFACE & COATINGS TECHNOLOGY, 301, 106–113.

By: J. Durham n & A. Rabiei n

author keywords: Hydroxyapatite; Polyether ether ketone; Adhesion; Ion beam assisted deposition
TL;DR: The adhesion strength of as-deposited HA/YSZ coatings on smooth, polished PEEK surfaces was mostly unaffected by microwave heat treatment, but decreased with additional autoclave treatment, while increasing surface roughness showed improvement of bond strength. (via Semantic Scholar)
