2015 journal article

Inferring causal relationships between reproductive and metabolic health disorders and production traits in first-lactation US Holsteins using recursive models

JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE, 98(4), 2713–2726.

By: K. Dhakal n, F. Tiezzi n, J. Clay* & C. Maltecca n

Contributors: K. Dhakal n, F. Tiezzi n, J. Clay* & C. Maltecca n

author keywords: causal effect; health; persistency; structural equation model
MeSH headings : Animals; Bayes Theorem; Cattle; Cattle Diseases / genetics; Female; Lactation / genetics; Metabolic Diseases / genetics; Metabolic Diseases / veterinary; Models, Biological; Pregnancy; Reproduction / genetics; Retrospective Studies
TL;DR: It is concluded that a health disorder occurring in early lactation has a moderate causal effect on the reproductive or metabolic health disorders occurring in later lactation, and the results obtained suggest that reproductive and metabolic health disorder and culling due to metabolic and reproductive diseases have strong causal relationships. Short communication: Genomic selection for hoof lesions in first-parity US Holsteins

JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE, 98(5), 3502–3507.

By: K. Dhakal n, F. Tiezzi n, J. Clay* & C. Maltecca n

Contributors: K. Dhakal n, F. Tiezzi n, J. Clay* & C. Maltecca n

author keywords: genomic selection; hoof lesions; reliability
MeSH headings : Animals; Cattle; Cattle Diseases / genetics; Female; Foot Diseases / genetics; Foot Diseases / veterinary; Genomics; Hoof and Claw / metabolism; Parity; Pedigree; Phenotype; Pregnancy; Selection, Genetic; United States
TL;DR: Pedigree- and genomic-based univariate analyses were conducted to estimate the variance components and heritability of infectious and noninfectious hoof lesions of US Holsteins and confirmed low genetic correlations between hoof lesion traits and hoof type traits along with productive life and net merit. 2013 journal article

Calf birth weight, gestation length, calving ease, and neonatal calf mortality in Holstein, Jersey, and crossbred cows in a pasture system

JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE, 96(1), 690–698.

By: K. Dhakal n, C. Maltecca n, J. Cassady n, G. Baloche, C. Williams n & S. Washburn n

Contributors: K. Dhakal n, C. Maltecca n, J. Cassady n, G. Baloche, C. Williams n & S. Washburn n

author keywords: crossbreeding; genetic group; Holstein; Jersey
MeSH headings : Animals; Animals, Newborn / physiology; Birth Weight / genetics; Birth Weight / physiology; Breeding; Cattle / genetics; Cattle / physiology; Delivery, Obstetric; Female; Gestational Age; Pregnancy; Pregnancy, Animal / genetics; Pregnancy, Animal / physiology; Stillbirth / veterinary
TL;DR: Maternal heterosis in crossbred primiparous dams was associated with reduced calf mortality and Genetic groups were replaced by linear regression using percentage of HH genes as coefficients on the above models and included as covariates to determine various genetic effects.
