Stuck between a ROS and a hard place: Analysis of the ubiquitin proteasome pathway in selenocysteine treated Brassica napus reveals different toxicities during selenium assimilation

JOURNAL OF PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, 181, 50–54.

author keywords: Selenocysteine; Proteasome; Ubiquitin; Reactive oxygen species; Selenium
MeSH headings : Brassica napus / drug effects; Brassica napus / metabolism; Cell Survival / drug effects; Mitochondria / drug effects; Mitochondria / metabolism; Plant Proteins / metabolism; Plant Roots / drug effects; Plant Roots / metabolism; Proteasome Endopeptidase Complex / metabolism; Proteasome Inhibitors / pharmacology; Reactive Oxygen Species / metabolism; Selenium / metabolism; Selenocysteine / pharmacology; Superoxides / metabolism; Ubiquitinated Proteins / metabolism; Ubiquitins / metabolism
TL;DR: This study uses Brassica napus to analyze the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway, which is capable of removing misfolded proteins, and indicates that selenocysteine induces protein misfolding in Sec-treated plants. (via Semantic Scholar)

2004 journal article

Dissolution of phosphate in a phosphorus-enriched ultisol as affected by microbial reduction

JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY, 33(5), 1793–1802.

By: K. Hutchison n & D. Hesterberg n

MeSH headings : Adsorption; Aluminum Silicates; Clay; Organic Chemicals; Phosphates / chemistry; Phosphorus / chemistry; Soil Microbiology; Solubility
TL;DR: Investigation of rates and mechanisms of P dissolution during microbial reduction of a surface soil from the North Carolina Coastal Plain indicated that increased dissolved organic matter (DOM) during soil reduction contributed to the increase in DRP, perhaps by competitive adsorption or formation of aqueous ternary DOM-Fe-PO(4) or DOM-Al-PO (4) complexes. 2001 journal article

Bonding of Hg(II) to reduced organic, sulfur in humic acid as affected by S/Hg ratio

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, 35(13), 2741–2745.

By: D. Hesterberg n, J. Chou n, K. Hutchison n & D. Sayers n

Contributors: D. Hesterberg n, J. Chou n, K. Hutchison n & D. Sayers n

MeSH headings : Absorption; Chemical Phenomena; Chemistry, Physical; Humic Substances / chemistry; Ligands; Mercury / chemistry; Organic Chemicals; Soil Pollutants / analysis; Sulfur / chemistry; Water Pollutants, Chemical / analysis
TL;DR: Results demonstrated preferential bonding of Hg(II) to reduced organic S sites and indicated that multiple sulfur ligands were coordinated with Hg2+ ions at high S/Hg ratios, which corresponded to low levels of complexed Hg (II). (via Semantic Scholar)

Hesterberg, D., Zhou, W. Q., Hutchison, K. J., Beauchemin, S., & Sayers, D. E. (1999, May 1). JOURNAL OF SYNCHROTRON RADIATION, Vol. 6, pp. 636–638.

By: D. Hesterberg*, W. Zhou, K. Hutchison*, S. Beauchemin & D. Sayers*

Contributors: D. Hesterberg*, W. Zhou, K. Hutchison*, S. Beauchemin & D. Sayers*

author keywords: XANES; phosphorus; speciation; soil
TL;DR: Phosphorus KXANES spectra for Fe-phosphates were characterized by a unique pre-edge feature near -3 eV (relative energy) that increased in intensity with increasing mineral crystallinity and was very weak for phosphate adsorbed on goethite. (via Semantic Scholar)
