Evaluation of ready-to-use freezer stocks of a synthetic microbial community for maize root colonization

Parnell, J. J., Vintila, S., Tang, C., Wagner, M. R., & Kleiner, M. (2023, December 12). (K. L. Hockett, Ed.). MICROBIOLOGY SPECTRUM, Vol. 12.

By: J. Parnell n, S. Vintila n, C. Tang n, M. Wagner* & M. Kleiner n

Ed(s): K. Hockett

author keywords: Synthetic communities; maize; root colonization; plant-microbe interactions; plant microbiome; SynCom
TL;DR: Comparing the reproducibility, stability, and colonization ability of freshly prepared versus frozen SynCom inocula shows that ready-to-use SynCom stocks provide comparable results to those of freshly constructed SynCom and thus allow for significant time savings when working with SynComs. Long-term structural and biomass dynamics of virgin Tsuga-canadensis-Pinus strobus forests after hurricane disturbance

ECOLOGY, 98(3), 721–733.

author keywords: aboveground biomass; coarse woody debris; forest structure; hurricane; Pinus strobus; temperate forest ecosystems; Tsuga canadensis
MeSH headings : Biomass; Cyclonic Storms; Ecosystem; Forests; New Hampshire; Pinus; Trees; Tsuga
TL;DR: The dominant role of old-growth P. strobus in live and detrital biomass pools before and after the hurricane demonstrate the disproportionate influence this species likely had on carbon storage at localized scales prior to the widespread, selective harvesting of large P.Âstrobus across the region in the 18th and 19th centuries. Host genotype and age shape the leaf and root microbiomes of a wild perennial plant

NATURE COMMUNICATIONS, 7.

MeSH headings : Brassicaceae / genetics; Brassicaceae / microbiology; Gene-Environment Interaction; Genotype; Microbiota / genetics; Plant Leaves / microbiology; Plant Roots / microbiology; RNA, Ribosomal, 16S / genetics; Soil; Soil Microbiology
TL;DR: A large-scale field experiment is used to assess the extent of host genetic and environmental factors on the microbiome of Boechera stricta, a perennial wild mustard, and demonstrates how genotype-by-environment interactions contribute to the complexity of microbiome assembly in natural environments.
