Advances in animal tracking are occurring simultaneously with changes to technology, in an evolving global scientific culture that increasingly promotes data sharing and transparency. However, there is a risk that misuse of biotelemetry data could increase the vulnerability of animals to human disturbance or exploitation. For the most part, telemetry data security is not a danger to animals or their ecosystems, but for some high-risk cases, as with species’ with high economic value or at-risk populations, available knowledge of their movements may promote active disturbance or worse, potential poaching. Isotopes offer an alternative way to quantify broad differences in animal diets. By obtaining samples of pet food from cat owners we predicted that we would have high power to identify cats feeding on wild birds or mammals, given that pet food is thought to have higher C isotope values, due to the pervasive use of corn and/or corn by-products as food ingredients, than native prey. We worked with citizen scientists to quantify the isotopes of 202 cat hair samples and 239 pet food samples from the US and UK. We also characterized the isotopes of 11 likely native prey species from the southeastern US and used mixing models to assess the diet of 47 cats from the same region. Variation in C and N isotope values for cat food was very high, even within the same brand/flavor, suggesting that pet food manufacturers use a wide range of ingredients, and that these may change over time. Cat food and cat hair from the UK had lower C values than the US, presumably reflecting differences in the amount of corn used in the food chains of the two countries. This high variation in pet food reduced our ability to classify cats as hunters of native prey, such that only 43% of the animals could be confidently assigned. If feral or free ranging cats were considered, this uncertainty would be even higher as pet food types would be unknown. Our results question the general assumption that anthropogenic foods always have high C isotope values, because of the high variability we documented within one product type (cat food) and between countries (US vs. UK), and emphasize the need to test a variety of standards before making conclusions from isotope ecology studies.}, journal={PeerJ}, publisher={PeerJ}, author={McDonald, Brandon W. and Perkins, Troi and Dunn, Robert R. and McDonald, Jennifer and Cole, Holly and Feranec, Robert S. and Kays, Roland}, year={2020}, month={Jan}, pages={e8337} } @article{thornton_reyna_perera-romero_radachowsky_hidalgo-mihart_garcia_mcnab_mcloughlin_foster_harmsen_et al._2020, title={Precipitous decline of white-lipped peccary populations in Mesoamerica}, volume={242}, ISBN={1873-2917}, ISSN={0006-3207}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.biocon.2020.108410}, DOI={10.1016/j.biocon.2020.108410}, journal={Biological Conservation}, publisher={Elsevier BV}, author={Thornton, Daniel and Reyna, Rafael and Perera-Romero, Lucy and Radachowsky, Jeremy and Hidalgo-Mihart, Mircea G. and Garcia, Rony and McNab, Roan and Mcloughlin, Lee and Foster, Rebecca and Harmsen, Bart and et al.}, year={2020}, month={Feb}, pages={108410} } @article{kays_dunn_parsons_mcdonald_perkins_powers_shell_mcdonald_cole_kikillus_et al._2020, title={The small home ranges and large local ecological impacts of pet cats}, volume={3}, ISBN={1469-1795}, ISSN={1367-9430 1469-1795}, url={http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/acv.12563}, DOI={10.1111/acv.12563}, number={5}, journal={Animal Conservation}, publisher={Wiley}, author={Kays, R. and Dunn, R. This is concerning to conservationists, as people tend to care about and invest in what they know. Children represent the future supporters of conservation, such that their knowledge about and feelings toward wildlife have the potential to influence conservation for many years to come. Yet, little research has been conducted on children’s attitudes toward wildlife, particularly across zones of urbanization. We surveyed 2,759 4–8th grade children across 22 suburban, exurban, and rural schools in North Carolina to determine their attitudes toward local, domestic, and exotic animals. We predicted that children who live in rural or exurban areas, where they may have more direct access to more wildlife species, would list more local animals as “liked” and fewer as “scary” compared to children in suburban areas. However, children, regardless of where they lived, provided mostly non-native mammals for open-ended responses, and were more likely to list local animals as scary than as liked. We found urbanization to have little effect on the number of local animals children listed, and the rankings of “liked” animals were correlated across zones of urbanization. Promising for conservation was that half of the top “liked” animals included species or taxonomic groups containing threatened or endangered species. Despite different levels of urbanization, children had either an unfamiliarity with and/or low preference for local animals, suggesting that a disconnect between children and local biodiversity is already well-established, even in more rural areas where many wildlife species can be found.}, journal={PeerJ}, publisher={PeerJ}, author={Schuttler, Stephanie G. and Stevenson, Kathryn and Kays, Roland and Dunn, Robert R.}, year={2019}, month={Jul}, pages={e7328} } @misc{bogan_kays_2019, title={Data from: Eastern coyote home range, habitat selection and survival in the Albany pine bush landscape}, url={https://www.datarepository.movebank.org/handle/10255/move.970}, DOI={10.5441/001/1.56pf8220}, abstractNote={Bogan DA (2004) Eastern coyote home range, habitat selection and survival rates in the Albany Pine Bush landscape. This represents the first genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) dataset with substantial sample sizes of representative populations. Although they comprise their own genetic cluster, we found evidence of eastern wolf dispersal outside of the boundaries of protected areas, in that the frequency of eastern wolf genetic variation decreases with increasing distance from provincial parks. We detected eastern wolf alleles in admixed coyotes along the northeastern regions of Lake Huron and Lake Ontario. Our analyses confirm the unique genomic composition of eastern wolves, which are mostly restricted to small fragmented patches of protected habitat in central Ontario. Here we present two studies that worked with volunteers to set camera traps for ecological surveys. The photographs recorded by these citizen scientists were archived and verified using the eMammal software platform, providing a professional grade, vouchered database of biodiversity records. Motivated by managers’ concern with perceived high bear activity, our first example enlisted the help of homeowners in a short-term study to compare black bear activity inside a National Historic Site with surrounding private land. We found similar levels of bear activity inside and outside the NHS, and regional comparisons suggest the bear population is typical. Participants benefited from knowing their local bear population was normal and managers refocused bear management given this new information. Our second example is a continuous survey of wildlife using the grounds of a nature education center that actively manages habitat to maintain a grassland prairie. Center staff incorporated the camera traps into educational programs, involving visitors with camera setup and picture review. Over two years and 5,968 camera-nights this survey has collected 41,393 detections of 14 wildlife species. Detection rates and occupancy were higher in open habitats compared to forest, suggesting that the maintenance of prairie habitat is beneficial to some species. Over 500 volunteers of all ages participated in this project over two years. Some of the greatest benefits have been to high school students, exemplified by a student with autism who increased his communication and comfort level with others through field work with the cameras. Here we document a population of lions in Tsavo National Park, Kenya, that is largely maneless and describe aspects of their social organization. Because Tsavo's arid landscape supports sparse prey populations, we expected that surveys of lions there would document small social groups. We hypothesized that Tsavo lions would consequently experience reduced sexual selection pressures for mane development. Adult males from Tsavo typically have sparse blond hair forming a dorsal crest, beard, chest tufts, and (or) sideburns, but lack the large flowing manes reported from other lion populations. No fully maned lions were seen. Maneless males in Tsavo appear to be well integrated into pride life, and were observed copulating, hunting, and otherwise interacting with groups of females, playing with dependent cubs, and advertising territories with scent markings and roars. Only one adult male was observed in each of five prides, which differs surprisingly from the coalitions of 2–4 pride males noted in other lion groups. However, female group size was large (mean 7.4) and comparable with what has been documented in the Serengeti and elsewhere, refuting our "group size – mane size" hypothesis. Future research should focus on the effect of Tsavo's physical and physiological effects on mane condition, and the possible correlation of male hormone levels with both manelessness and small male-group size. }, number={3}, journal={Canadian Journal of Zoology}, publisher={Canadian Science Publishing}, author={Kays, Roland W and Patterson, Bruce D}, year={2002}, month={Mar}, pages={471–478} } @inbook{pickering_kays_meier_andrew_yatskievych_2002, place={Mexico City, Mexico}, title={The Appalacians}, booktitle={Wilderness: Earth's last wild place}, publisher={Conservation International}, author={Pickering, J. and Kays, R. and Meier, A. and Andrew, S. and Yatskievych, K.}, editor={Mittermeier, R.A. and Mittermeier, C.G. and Gil, P.
