Method Development for a Short-Term 7-Day Toxicity Test with Unionid Mussels

ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY, 40(12), 3392–3409.

By: N. Wang*, J. Kunz*, D. Hardesty*, J. Steevens*, T. Norberg-King*, E. Hammer*, C. Bauer*, T. Augspurger* ...

author keywords: Whole effluent toxicity; Species sensitivity; Test methods; Interlaboratory variability; Sodium chloride
MeSH headings : Animals; Bivalvia; Fresh Water; Toxicity Tests; Unionidae; Water Pollutants, Chemical / toxicity
TL;DR: The mussel test method was refined by determining the best feeding rate of a commercial algal mixture for 3 age groups (1, 2, and 3-wk old) of L. siliquoidea in a 7-d feeding experiment, and then used the derived optimal feeding rates to assess the sensitivity of the 3 ages of juveniles in a7-d reference toxicant (NaCl) test. Evaluation of Juvenile Freshwater Mussel Sensitivity to Multiple Forms of Florpyrauxifen-Benzyl

BULLETIN OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND TOXICOLOGY, 105(4), 588–594.

author keywords: Unionid; Toxicity; Herbicide; Florpyrauxifen-benzyl; ProcellaCOR (R); Rinskor (TM)
TL;DR: The results show that the herbicide formulations and compounds tested were not acutely toxic to juveniles of these two species of freshwater mussels, indicating minimal risk of short-term exposure from florpyrauxifen-benzyl applications in the environment for aquatic weed control.
