Significantly less control of budworm larvae and damage was obtained with methomyl in early 1970 than in 1968–69, 1971–72, and late 1970. In early 1970, methomyl provided 35 and 25% control of larvae and damage, respectively. In the other seasons, control of larvae and damage with methomyl averaged 82 and 72%, respectively. When tested in early 1970, carbaryl, endosulfan, monocrotophos, Supracide® (O,O-dimethyl phosphorodithioate, S-ester with 4-[mercaptomethyl]-2-methoxy-Δ2-1,3,4-thiadiazolin-5-one), TDE, and Thuricide HP® (Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner) also performed poorly vs. the tobacco budworm. The abnormally low insecticidal control obtained in early 1970 appeared to be related to low rainfall and low relative humidity. Observations suggest that the effects of low moisture on tobacco plants and budworm larvae reduced the effectiveness of insecticides. Except for compound XV, all the analogs were better inhibitors of flyhead acetylcholinesterase than of bovine erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase. The large bimolecular reaction constants were the result of higher affinity and phosphorylation rates. Mono-substitution on the carbamoyl nitrogen primarily affected reactivity (k2), whereas di-substitution affected affinity (Ka). Modification of the 0,0-dialkyl moiety had little effect on affinity although reactivity decreased proportionately with chain length. There is some indication that the interaction of these inhibitors with flyhead AChE is due to a considerable electrostatic contribution. The difference between target enzymes (housefly versus erythrocyte AChE) accounts in part for the selectivity of dimethoate and its analogs. Newly hatched larvae are polyphagous and will feed on many kinds of non-hostplants although they are not able to grow on them. They become oligophagous when they are reared on solanaceous plants but remain polyphagous when reared on diet. The critical period for induction is in the first instar. The induced oligophagous behaviour can be reversed by forcing larvae to feed on diet. Insects of the 3 species deprived of proteinaceous diet 7 h after their emergence and given only 10% sucrose solution laid only 16.7, 16.8, and 15.9 eggs per female, respectively. Shorter adult life spans and lower daily rates of egg laying contributed to the observed reduction. The daily oviposition rate increased rapidly during the first 5–7 days of cohort's age and declined gradually afterwards. Gamma distribution functions described the data. This common type of oviposition trend was shown to be an artifact of pooling the records from different females having large variance in preovipositional time. Individual records from 45 pairs of H. pusio revealed oviposition occurred in distinct gonotrophic cycles. The mean number of eggs per live female declined exponentially with the physiological age of females. The mean number of gonotrophic cycles per female was 9.93, with a mean gonotrophic cycle length of 3.23 days. An indirect probabilistic method was developed for estimating the duration of the oviposition phase of a gonotrophic cycle. The greater the number of eggs per batch, the longer the oviposition phase, with an asymptote of approximately 11 h. The day-degree concept, with its linear temperature–rate relationship, has not been adequate for simulation of field populations under highly variable temperature conditions. Similarly, several of the non-linear relationships proposed in the past (Janisch’s catenary, parabola) have also been inadequate. All of these relationships produce large errors at temperature extremes. This paper presents a comparison of various functions which have been used for developmental time estimation and an algorithm for a sigmoid function which can be used in simulations having either a calendar or a physiological time base. Validation of the algorithm is presented for three insect species.
