Conversion from an American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.) biomass crop to a no-till corn (Zea mays L.) system: Crop yields and management implications

Soil and Tillage Research, 87(1), 101–111.

By: W. Devine*, D. Tyler*, M. Mullen*, A. Houston*, J. Joslin, D. Hodges*, V. Tolbert*, M. Walsh*

author keywords: American sycamore; corn; bioenergy crops; crop rotation; fertilization; nitrogen immobilization
TL;DR: After converting from a SRWC to a row crop, plant-available N should be carefully monitored due to potential losses from N immobilization in woody residues, as indicated by the responses of this study. (via Semantic Scholar)

Emus as non-standard seed dispersers and their potential for long-distance dispersal

ECOGRAPHY, 29(4), 632–640.

By: M. Calvino-Cancela, R. Dunn*, E. Etten & B. Lamont

Contributors: M. Calviño-Cancela, R. Dunn*, E. Van Etten & B. Lamont

TL;DR: The role of emus as non-standard agents for long-distance dispersal should be taken into account for understanding current geographic ranges, gene flow and metapopulation dynamics of some plant species, as well as for predicting their future responses to climate change and fragmentation. Descriptive flavor analysis of bacon and pork loin from lean-genotype gilts fed conjugated linoleic acid and supplemental fat

JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCE, 84(12), 3381–3386.

By: L. Gatlin n, M. See n, D. Larick n & J. Odle n

author keywords: pork quality; conjugated linoleic acid; sensory analysis; supplemental fat; taste panel
MeSH headings : Animal Feed; Animals; Diet; Dietary Fats / pharmacology; Dietary Supplements; Female; Genotype; Linoleic Acid / pharmacology; Linoleic Acids, Conjugated / pharmacology; Meat / standards; Random Allocation; Swine / genetics
TL;DR: The sensory panel results indicate consumer acceptance of bacon and pork products from pigs fed CLA will not likely differ from commodity pork products, and flavor differences for bacon and loin samples were minimal. (via Semantic Scholar)

The river domain: why are there more species halfway up the river?

ECOGRAPHY, 29(2), 251–259.

By: R. Dunn n, R. Colwell & C. Nilsson

Contributors: R. Dunn n, R. Colwell & C. Nilsson

TL;DR: The results suggest that the peak in riparian plant species richness in the middlecourses of the rivers studied can be explained by an underlying mid-domain effect(driven by geometric constraints on large-ranged species), together with environmentffects on richness patterns (particularly on small-ranged Species).
