1985 journal article

Effect of ascorbate on covalent binding of benzene and phenol metabolites to isolated tissue preparations

Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, 77(2), 334–343.

By: R. Smart* & V. Zannoni*

MeSH headings : Animals; Ascorbic Acid / physiology; Benzene / metabolism; Binding Sites; Binding, Competitive; Bone Marrow / metabolism; Glutathione / physiology; Guinea Pigs; In Vitro Techniques; Lung / metabolism; Male; Microsomes, Liver / metabolism; NAD(P)H Dehydrogenase (Quinone); Phenols / metabolism; Quinone Reductases / physiology
TL;DR: The results indicate that different metabolites are responsible for a portion of the covalent binding depending upon the substrate employed, and how the dietary intake of ascorbate can result in a differential response to a potentially toxic event in vitro. (via Semantic Scholar)

Modulation of substrate-specific glutathione S-transferase activity in daphnia magna with concomitant effects on toxicity tolerance

Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part C: Comparative Pharmacology, 82(1), 37–42.

By: G. Leblanc* & B. Cochrane*

MeSH headings : Animals; Daphnia / drug effects; Daphnia / enzymology; Dinitrochlorobenzene / pharmacology; Enzyme Induction / drug effects; Epoxy Compounds / pharmacology; Ethacrynic Acid / pharmacology; Glutathione Transferase / metabolism; Nitrobenzenes / pharmacology; Nitrophenols / pharmacology; Pentachlorophenol / pharmacology; Substrate Specificity
TL;DR: Preexposure of daphnids to CDNB or PCP increased the organisms' tolerance to the toxic effects of PCP, but not CDNB, and GST activity towards CDNB and EA was biochemically separated into different protein fractions suggesting the existence of two distinct isozymes. (via Semantic Scholar)

Effects of copper on the competitive interactions of two species of cladocera

Environmental Pollution Series A, Ecological and Biological, 37(1), 13–25.

By: G. LeBlanc*

TL;DR: This study, in conjunction with others, suggests that D. magna population growth is augmented by the presence of low levels of copper, and the inhibiting effect of copper on D. pulex population growth relieves D. Magna of the competitive inhibition experienced when these species are together. (via Semantic Scholar)

BLACK-FOOTED FERRET MUSTELA-NIGRIPES ENERGY-EXPENDITURE AND PREY REQUIREMENTS

BIOLOGICAL CONSERVATION, 34(1), 1–15.

By: R. Powell n, T. Clark*, L. Richardson & S. Forrest

TL;DR: The Siberian polecat M. eversmanni was used as a biological model for the endangered ferret to estimate energy and nutrient aquisition from two ferret prey species and gross energy content, proximate analyses and utilisation by the polecats of the two prey did not differ and were comparable to results for other carnivores.
