Generalized 3D fragmentation index derived from lidar point clouds

Open Geospatial Data, Software and Standards.

Anna Petrasova

TL;DR: A 2D forest fragmentation index developed for regional scale analyses is extended into a 3D index for analyzing vegetation structure at a much finer scale, demonstrating that this proposed index can be used to describe different types of vegetation structure making it a promising tool for remote sensing and landscape ecology. Declining Occurrence and Low Colonization Probability in Freshwater Mussel Assemblages: A Dynamic Occurrence Modeling Approach

Freshwater Mollusk Biology and Conservation, 20(1), 13.

By: T. Pandolfo, T. Kwak*, W. Cope n, R. Heise*, R. Nichols* & K. Pacifici n

TL;DR: Results indicate that mussels persisted at sites already occupied but that they have not colonized sites where they had not occurred previously, highlighting the importance of modeling approaches that incorporate imperfect detection in estimating species occurrence and revealing temporal trends to inform conservation planning. Spread of common native and invasive grasses and ruderal trees following anthropogenic disturbances in a tropical dry forest

Ecological Processes, 6(1).

By: X. Jaime*, S. Van Bloem*, F. Koch* & S. Nelson n

author keywords: Tropical dry forest; Grass invasions; Bulldozing; Wildfire; Leucaena leucocephala; Megathyrsus (Panicum) maximus; Uniola virgata

Applied Physics Letters, 110(9), 091902.

By: D. Li n, E. Bucholz n, G. Peterson n, B. Reich n, J. Russ n & D. Brenner n

TL;DR: This work combines image analysis with molecular dynamics simulation to quantify similarities between atomic structures of plastic damage in a database of strained copper bi-crystals, and shows that a manifold of different outcomes can originate ostensibly from the same initial structure.
