Prioritizing forest fuels treatments based on the probability of high-severity fire restores adaptive capacity in Sierran forests

Global Change Biology, 24(2), 729–737.

By: D. Krofcheck*, M. Hurteau*, R. Scheller n & E. Loudermilk*

Contributors: D. Krofcheck*, M. Hurteau*, R. Scheller n & E. Loudermilk*

MeSH headings : Adaptation, Biological; Carbon / analysis; Climate Change; Fires; Forests; Models, Theoretical; North America; Probability; Weather; Wildfires
TL;DR: This work sought to determine if a priori knowledge of where uncharacteristic wildfire is most probable could be used to optimize the placement of fuels treatments in a Sierra Nevada watershed and developed two treatment placement strategies: the naive strategy, based on treating all operationally available area and the optimized strategy, which only treated areas where crown-killing fires were most probable. Simulating infrastructure outages: An open-source geospatial approach

International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences - ISPRS Archives, 42(3W4), 389–396.

By: O. Pala n & P. Schrum n

Contributors: O. Pala n & P. Schrum n

TL;DR: The architecture and initial implementation of the platform-independent, open-source geospatial simulation engine, which can consider the amount of commodity at the transmission source and sinks and set thresholds at sinks to trigger and simulate outages, is described. (via Semantic Scholar)

Unexpected slowdown of US pollutant emission reduction in the past decade

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 115(20), 5099–5104.

TL;DR: A significant slowdown in decreasing US emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon monoxide (CO) for 2011–2015 is shown using satellite and surface measurements and impedes compliance with local and federal agency air-quality goals. (via Semantic Scholar)

Determining Frankliniella fusca (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Egg Distribution in Neonicotinoid Seed-Treated Cotton

Journal of Economic Entomology, 112(2), 827–834.

By: D. D’Ambrosio n, A. Huseth n & G. Kennedy n

MeSH headings : Animals; Female; Larva; Neonicotinoids; Oviposition; Seeds; Thysanoptera
TL;DR: It is suggested that injury to cotton seedlings is primarily caused by F. fusca emerging on the cotyledons, and then moving to developing leaves, which can better inform management tactics in cotton, such as well-timed foliar sprays, which are needed to maintain effective thrips management. Long-Term Empirical and Observational Evidence of Practical Helicoverpa zea Resistance to Cotton With Pyramided Bt Toxins

Journal of Economic Entomology, 111(4), 1824–1833.

By: D. Reisig n, A. Huseth n, J. Bacheler n, M. Aghaee n, L. Braswell n, H. Burrack n, K. Flanders*, J. Greene* ...

MeSH headings : Animals; Bacterial Proteins; Endotoxins; Gossypium; Hemolysin Proteins; Insecticide Resistance; Moths; North Carolina; Plants, Genetically Modified; Zea mays
TL;DR: Bioassay data indicated that there was a range of Cry1Ac susceptibility across the southeastern United States, and it is probable that resistant populations are common because H. zea is resistant to cotton expressing pyramided Cry toxins. (via Semantic Scholar)
