Expanded view of the ecological genomics of ant responses to climate change

In bioRxiv (Preprint No. 302679).

TL;DR: It is found that after controlling for both spatial autocorrelation and phylogenetics ant genome size was marginally correlated with sample site climate similarity, and minimum temperature showed the strongest correlation with genome size, suggesting that temperature extremes could be a selective force acting on ant genomes. <strong>The Exoskeletons in our Closets: A synthesis of research from the ‘Arthropods of our Homes’ project in Raleigh, NC

Zoosymposia, 12(1), 64–68.

By: M. Leong*, M. Bertone n, K. Bayless n, R. Dunn n & M. Trautwein*

TL;DR: Research of caves inhabited by prehistoric people 26,000 years ago suggest arthropod pests already lived alongside the authors' ancestors in those caves, and arthropods are also both abundant and diverse in domestic archaeological sites from agricultural civilizations in Egypt, Israel and Europe. Estimation and welfare analysis from mixed logit models with large choice sets

Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, 90, 101–118.

By: R. von Haefen n & A. Domanski

author keywords: Discrete choice; Sampling of alternatives; Welfare measurement; Recreation
TL;DR: Although the results confirm that larger efficiency losses arise with smaller samples as theory would predict, they suggest that depending on researcher needs, random samples as small as 28 alternatives can produce relatively accurate welfare estimates that are useful for exploratory modeling, sensitivity analysis, and policy purposes. TL;DR: Evaluation of the USGS's Load Estimator (LOADEST) and the Weighted Regression on Time, Discharge, and Season (WRTDS) models in predicting total nitrogen loads over 18 stations from the Water Quality Network show good performance, but both models captured only 40% of observed variance in total nitrogen concentration.
