New software for quantifying incubation behavior from time-series recordings

Journal of Field Ornithology, 76(4), 352–356.

By: C. Cooper* & H. Mills*

author keywords: automated analysis; data logger; incubation rhythm; Raven; The Birdhouse Network
TL;DR: The software program, called Rhythm, works in conjunction with Raven, a bioacoustical analysis program, to partially automate the measurement of incubation off-bout duration and related statistics such as percent constancy. (via Semantic Scholar)

Seasonal and Latitudinal Trends in Clutch Size: Thermal Constraints During Laying and Incubation

Ecology, 86(8), 2018–2031.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka*, G. Butcher* & A. Dhondt*

author keywords: clutch size variation; Cornell Nest Record Program; critical temperatures; egg viability; hatching failure; incubation period; latitude gradients; onset of incubation; seasonal constraints
TL;DR: Using general linear mixed models, it is found that large-scale nesting patterns of Eastern Bluebirds and Red-winged Blackbirds are consistent with the egg-viability hypothesis in that females appear to initiate incubation before clutch completion when they lay large clutches at low latitudes. Latitudinal trends in within-year reoccupation of nest boxes and their implications

Journal of Avian Biology, 36(1), 31–39.

By: C. Cooper*, W. Hochachka & A. Dhondt

TL;DR: This work analyzed nest box reoccupation by a multiple-brooding species, the eastern bluebird Sialia sialis, reported by volunteers in a citizen-participation project (1998–2002), and found nest boxes in the southern portion of the bluebird range had, on average 17–33% higher likelihood of repeated egg-laying, brooding, and successful fledging events than Boxes in the north. Mean latitudinal range sizes of bird assemblages in six Neotropical forest chronosequences

Global Ecology and Biogeography, 14(4), 359–366.

By: R. Dunn* & T. Romdal

Contributors: R. Dunn* & T. Romdal

author keywords: beta diversity; birds; disturbance; range size frequency distribution; secondary forest; tropical forest
TL;DR: It is suggested that as early successional habitats mature, a consistent shift from large-ranged species towards more small ranged species occurs and conservation of secondary forests alone will miss many of the species most at risk of extinction and most unlikely to be conserved in other locations or biomes. Modern insect extinctions, the neglected majority

Conservation Biology, 19(4), 1030–1036.

By: R. Dunn*

Contributors: R. Dunn*

author keywords: coextinction; extinction rates; parasites
TL;DR: By focusing on some of the 70 documented extinctions as case studies, it is suggested that two types of extinction might be common for insects but rare for other taxa: extinction of narrow habitat specialists and coextinctions of affiliates with the extinctions of their hosts. A century of avifaunal turnover in a small tropical rainforest fragment

Animal Conservation, 8(2), 217–222.

By: N. Sodhi*, T. Lee*, L. Koh* & R. Dunn*

Contributors: N. Sodhi*, T. Lee*, L. Koh* & R. Dunn*

TL;DR: It is suggested that small isolated tropical forest fragments may have limited long‐term conservation value for native forest bird species, as in the case of the Singapore Botanic Gardens rainforest fragment between 1898 and 1998. (via Semantic Scholar)
