Development of a universal double-digest RAD sequencing approach for a group of nonmodel, ecologically and economically important insect and fish taxa

MOLECULAR ECOLOGY RESOURCES, 16(6), 1303–1314.

author keywords: double-digest RAD sequencing; high-throughput sequencing; reduced representation sequencing; restriction enzyme digests
MeSH headings : Animals; DNA / chemistry; DNA / metabolism; DNA Restriction Enzymes / metabolism; Fishes / genetics; Genomics / methods; Insecta / genetics; Sequence Analysis, DNA / methods
TL;DR: The results of this study provide empirical evidence of the utility of this method for producing consistent data for diverse nonmodel species and suggest specific considerations for sequencing analysis strategies. (via Semantic Scholar)

Phylogenetic Analysis of Molluscan Metallothioneins: Evolutionary Insight from Crassostrea virginica

JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR EVOLUTION, 83(3-4), 110–125.

By: M. Jenny*, S. Payton*, D. Baltzegar n & J. Lozier*

author keywords: Metallothionein; Gene duplication; Adaptation; Molecular evolution; Molluscs
MeSH headings : Amino Acids / genetics; Animals; Biological Evolution; Crassostrea / genetics; Exons; Gene Duplication / genetics; Gene Expression Regulation; Metallothionein / chemistry; Metallothionein / genetics; Phylogeny; Protein Isoforms; Sequence Analysis, Protein
TL;DR: Annotation of the complete locus containing the paralogous CvMT-I, -II, and -IV genes are annotated, providing supporting evidence of a hypothesized series of exon and gene duplication events that gave rise to the various Cv MT-I and -II isoforms. (via Semantic Scholar)

Unrelated secondary reproductives in the neotropical termite Silvestritermes euamignathus (Isoptera: Termitidae)

SCIENCE OF NATURE, 103(1-2).

author keywords: Microsatellites; mtDNA; COI; Genotyping; Neotenics
MeSH headings : Animals; DNA, Mitochondrial / genetics; Electron Transport Complex IV / genetics; Genotype; Isoptera / genetics; Isoptera / physiology; Microsatellite Repeats / genetics; Nymph; Reproduction; Tropical Climate
TL;DR: The results showed that nymphoids of S. euamignathus are not all siblings, and the microsatellite analysis suggests that the secondary reproduced derived from a minimum of four different pairs of reproductives belonging to at least two different matrilines, the first record of non-sibling secondary reproduced occupying the same nest in a higher termite.
