Diverse Cadmium Resistance Determinants in Listeria monocytogenes Isolates from the Turkey Processing Plant Environment

APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, 76(2), 627–630.

MeSH headings : Animals; Cadmium / pharmacology; Drug Resistance; Food-Processing Industry; Listeria monocytogenes / classification; Listeria monocytogenes / drug effects; Serotyping; Turkeys / microbiology
TL;DR: Two different cadA cadmium resistance determinants (cadA1, first identified in Tn5422, and cadA2, associated with pLM80) were detected among Cadmium-resistant Listeria monocytogenes strains from turkey processing plants. (via Semantic Scholar)

Discovery of chicken microRNAs associated with lipogenesis and cell proliferation

PHYSIOLOGICAL GENOMICS, 41(2), 185–193.

author keywords: liver; targets
MeSH headings : Animals; Cell Proliferation; Chick Embryo; Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental; Gene Library; Gene Regulatory Networks; Lipogenesis / genetics; Liver / embryology; Liver / metabolism; MicroRNAs / metabolism; Sequence Analysis, RNA; Time Factors
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a diverse group of miRNAs are expressed in developing avian livers, some of which have been suggested to play a key role(s) in regulating metabolic pathways. (via Semantic Scholar)

Dietary Phosphate Restriction Decreases Stem Cell Proliferation and Subsequent Growth Potential in Neonatal Pigs

JOURNAL OF NUTRITION, 140(3), 477–482.

By: L. Alexander n, A. Mahajan n, J. Odle n, K. Flann*, R. Rhoads* & C. Stahl n

MeSH headings : Animal Feed / analysis; Animal Nutritional Physiological Phenomena; Animals; Bone Density / drug effects; Bone Marrow / drug effects; Bone Marrow / metabolism; Cell Proliferation / drug effects; Diet / veterinary; Female; Kidney / drug effects; Kidney / metabolism; Male; Mesenchymal Stem Cells / drug effects; Phosphorus / deficiency; Phosphorus, Dietary / pharmacology; Swine / growth & development; Weight Gain / drug effects
TL;DR: Data indicate that in addition to reductions in muscle and bone growth, dietary PO(4) affects proliferation of tissue-specific stem cells in vivo, which may have profound implications for life-long growth potential. (via Semantic Scholar)

The effects of commercial cool water washing of shell eggs on Haugh unit, vitelline membrane strength, aerobic microorganisms, and fungi

POULTRY SCIENCE, 89(1), 160–168.

By: A. Caudill*, P. Curtis*, K. Anderson n, L. Kerth*, O. Oyarazabal*, D. Jones*, M. Musgrove*

author keywords: shell egg; cool wash; egg quality; bacteria; fungi
MeSH headings : Animals; Bacteria, Aerobic / isolation & purification; Chickens; Eggs / microbiology; Food Handling / methods; Fungi / isolation & purification; Temperature; Vitelline Membrane / physiology; Water
TL;DR: Results of this study indicate that incorporating cool water into commercial shell egg processing, while maintaining a pH of 10 to 12, lowers postprocessing egg temperatures and allows for more rapid cooling, without causing a decline in egg quality or increasing the presence of aerobic microorganisms and fungi for approximately 5 wk postprocessing. Sampling method and location affect recovery of coliforms and Escherichia coli from broiler carcasses

POULTRY SCIENCE, 89(1), 169–172.

By: D. Smith*

author keywords: broiler carcass; coliform; Escherichia coli; sampling method; location difference
MeSH headings : Animals; Chickens; Enterobacteriaceae / isolation & purification; Food Handling / methods; Food Microbiology; Meat / microbiology
TL;DR: Bacterial counts of broiler carcasses are affected by both the sampling method used and by carcass location sampled, and higher numbers of coliforms and E. coli were recovered from the dorsal carcass half compared with the ventral half. (via Semantic Scholar)

Proteins involved in iron metabolism in beef cattle are affected by copper deficiency in combination with high dietary manganese, but not by copper deficiency alone

JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCE, 88(1), 275–283.

By: S. Hansen n, N. Trakooljul n, H. Liu n, J. Hicks n, M. Ashwell n & J. Spears n

author keywords: cattle; copper; iron; metal transporter
MeSH headings : Animal Feed; Animal Nutritional Physiological Phenomena; Animals; Cation Transport Proteins / genetics; Cation Transport Proteins / metabolism; Cattle; Copper / blood; Copper / deficiency; Diet / veterinary; Dose-Response Relationship, Drug; Female; Gene Expression Regulation / drug effects; Iron / metabolism; Male; Manganese / administration & dosage; Manganese / pharmacology
TL;DR: It is confirmed that Cu deficiency alone did affect hepatic gene expression of hepcidin and ferroportin, but did not affect duodenal expression of proteins important in Fe metabolism, however, the addition of 500 mg of Mn/kg of DM to a diet low in Cu reduced duodentally expression of the Fe import protein DMT1.
