Regulation of superoxide dismutase synthesis in Escherichia coli: glucose effect

Journal of Bacteriology, 132(2), 505–510.

By: H. Hassan & I. Fridovich

MeSH headings : Cyclic AMP / metabolism; Enzyme Repression; Escherichia coli / enzymology; Escherichia coli / metabolism; Fermentation; Glucose / metabolism; Hydrogen-Ion Concentration; Methylglucosides / pharmacology; Paraquat / pharmacology; Superoxide Dismutase / biosynthesis
TL;DR: It appears likely that superoxide dismutase is controlled directly or indirectly by the intracellular level of O2- and that glucose depressed the level of this enzyme because glucose metabolism is not associated with as rapid a production of O 2- as is the metabolsim of many other substances. Physiological function of superoxide dismutase in glucose-limited chemostat cultures of Escherichia coli

Journal of Bacteriology, 130(2), 805–811.

By: H. Hassan* & I. Fridovich

MeSH headings : Escherichia coli / drug effects; Escherichia coli / enzymology; Escherichia coli / growth & development; Free Radicals; Glucose / metabolism; Isoenzymes / analysis; Oxygen / pharmacology; Oxygen Consumption; Streptonigrin / pharmacology; Superoxide Dismutase / analysis; Superoxide Dismutase / physiology; Superoxides / metabolism
TL;DR: Conditions for continuous culture of Escherichia coli K-12 His- Thi- under glucose limitation were established, and results indicated a progressive deficiency of reducing power at growth rates below 0.25/h and a surfeit of reducingPower with progressively greater protection against O2- by superoxide dismutase at growth rate greater than 0. Biochemical and physiological properties of alkaline phosphatases in five isolates of marine bacteria

Journal of Bacteriology, 129(3), 1607–1612.

By: H. Hassan* & D. Pratt

MeSH headings : Alkaline Phosphatase / biosynthesis; Alkaline Phosphatase / metabolism; Bacteria / enzymology; Enzyme Repression; Isoenzymes / biosynthesis; Kinetics; Magnesium / pharmacology; Phosphates / pharmacology; Seawater; Species Specificity
TL;DR: The alkaline phosphatase activities of five unique isolates of marine bacteria were found to be associated with the periplasmic space; however, the enzymes from these isolates differed with respect to their repressibility, the apparent number of isoenzymes, the necessity for Mg2 for activity, and the conditions required for their release. Regulation of the synthesis of superoxide dismutase in Escherichia coli. Induction by methyl viologen.

Journal of Biological Chemistry, 252(21), 7667–7672.

By: H. Hassan* & I. Fridovich*

TL;DR: It seems likely that paraquat subverts a portion of the normal, cyanide-sensitive, electron flow in the cells and transfers that electron flow to oxygen, in an increased rate of intracellular production of O,-, then induces or derepresses the biosynthesis of the manganese-superoxide dismutase, which defends the cell against the deleterious reactivities of this radical. Enzymatic defenses against the toxicity of oxygen and of streptonigrin in Escherichia coli

Journal of Bacteriology, 129(3), 1574–1583.

By: H. Hassan* & I. Fridovich

MeSH headings : Anaerobiosis; Catalase / biosynthesis; Chloramphenicol / pharmacology; Enzyme Induction / drug effects; Escherichia coli / drug effects; Escherichia coli / enzymology; Escherichia coli / ultrastructure; Isoenzymes / biosynthesis; Oxygen / toxicity; Peroxidases / biosynthesis; Puromycin / pharmacology; Streptonigrin / toxicity; Superoxide Dismutase / biosynthesis
TL;DR: Anaerobically grown Escherichia coli K-12 cells showed a much greater oxygen enhancement of the lethality of streptonigrin than did aerobically growing cells, in accord with the proposal that streptonigratedin can serve as an intracellular source of superoxide. (via Semantic Scholar)
