Mechanism of the antibiotic action pyocyanine

Journal of Bacteriology, 141(1), 156–163.

By: H. Hassan* & I. Fridovich

MeSH headings : Catalase / biosynthesis; Enzyme Induction; Escherichia coli / drug effects; Escherichia coli / metabolism; Hydrogen Peroxide / metabolism; Isoenzymes; Oxygen / metabolism; Oxygen Consumption / drug effects; Phenazines / pharmacology; Pseudomonas aeruginosa / drug effects; Pyocyanine / pharmacology; Superoxide Dismutase / biosynthesis; Superoxides / metabolism
TL;DR: It is concluded that pyocyanine diverts electron flow and thus increases the production of O2- and H2O2 and that the antibiotic action of this pigment is largely a reflection of the toxicity of these products of oxygen reduction. (via Semantic Scholar)

Inhibitors of superoxide dismutases: A cautionary tale

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 199(2), 349–354.

By: H. Hassan*, H. Dougherty* & I. Fridovich*

MeSH headings : Animals; Cattle; Cytochrome c Group / metabolism; Dianisidine / metabolism; Enterococcus faecalis / enzymology; Erythrocytes / enzymology; Escherichia coli / enzymology; Metalloproteins / metabolism; Naphthols / pharmacology; Oxidation-Reduction; Superoxide Dismutase / antagonists & inhibitors; Superoxide Dismutase / blood
TL;DR: It was shown that pamoic acid did not at all inhibit superoxide dismutase but rather diminished the sensitivity of the assays, and the mechanism proposed to account for this effect involved oxidation of pamoate, by O2−, to yield a pamoates radical which can then reduce cytochrome c or oxidize pyrogallol. Effect of mercury toxicity on serum osmolality, plasma sodium and potassium, and serum protein in the chicken

Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 9, 431–436.

By: J. Brake n, P. Hester n, P. Thaxton n, G. Morgan n & C. Sikes n

MeSH headings : Animals; Blood Protein Electrophoresis; Blood Proteins / metabolism; Chickens; Diet; Male; Mercury / toxicity; Osmolar Concentration; Potassium / blood; Sodium / blood
TL;DR: It is concluded that alterations in serum ions and proteins account for the significant increase in plasma osmolality and the increase in transferrins may represent a mechanism to bind and detoxify Hg. (via Semantic Scholar)

By: P. Thaxton n, G. Morgan n, J. Brake n & D. Williams n

TL;DR: Comparisons of growth, feed efficiency, carcass quality, and a survey of physiological fitness of both treatment groups were made, and the battery brooded birds exhibited lower final body weights and lower feed conversion ratios than the floor reared birds. (via Semantic Scholar)

GENETIC-RESISTANCE OF CHICKENS TO AFLATOXIN ASSESSED WITH ORGAN-CULTURE TECHNIQUES

AVIAN DISEASES, 24(2), 415–422.

By: C. Williams*, W. Colwell & L. Rose

TL;DR: A chick tracheal-organ-culture model system was used to evaluate the sensitivity of various strains of chickens to aflatoxin B1, with male chicks more resistant than female chicks and within-category strains and sex differed significantly in sensitivity to damage by a flatoxin.
