Peripheral sensory coding through oscillatory synchrony in weakly electric fish

ELife, 4(AUGUST2015).

By: C. Baker*, K. Huck* & B. Carlson*

Contributors: C. Baker*, K. Huck* & B. Carlson*

TL;DR: It is found that oscillating receptors respond to electric pulses by resetting their phase, resulting in transient synchrony among receptors that encodes signal timing and location, but not waveform, which provides the first evidence for sensory coding through oscillatory synchrony. The Circadian Clock Controls Sunburn Apoptosis and Erythema in Mouse Skin

Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

Contributors: S. Gaddameedhi*, C. Selby*, M. Kemp*, R. Ye & A. Sancar*

MeSH headings : Animals; Apoptosis; Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated Proteins / metabolism; Circadian Clocks; Cytokines / metabolism; DNA Damage; DNA Repair; Erythema / etiology; Immunohistochemistry; Inflammation; Male; Mice; Mice, Inbred C57BL; Mice, Transgenic; Skin / metabolism; Skin / radiation effects; Skin Neoplasms / metabolism; Sunburn; Time Factors; Ultraviolet Rays
TL;DR: Interestingly, it is observed that sunburn apoptosis, inflammatory cytokine induction, and erythema were maximal following an acute early morning exposure to UV and minimal following an afternoon exposure, the first evidence that the circadian clock plays an important role in the ery themal response in UV-irradiated skin.
