author keywords: Glutamate; acetylcholine; dopamine; sensory stimuli; ventral tegmental area
MeSH headings : Animals; Cell Body / drug effects; Cell Body / metabolism; Cholinergic Agonists / administration & dosage; Dopamine / metabolism; Male; Microinjections / methods; N-Methylaspartate / administration & dosage; Photic Stimulation / methods; Psychomotor Performance / drug effects; Psychomotor Performance / physiology; Rats; Rats, Sprague-Dawley; Receptors, N-Methyl-D-Aspartate / agonists; Receptors, N-Methyl-D-Aspartate / antagonists & inhibitors; Receptors, N-Methyl-D-Aspartate / metabolism; Ventral Tegmental Area / drug effects; Ventral Tegmental Area / metabolism
TL;DR: It is suggested that acetylcholine and glutamate synergistically act at dopamine cells in the VTA to modulate VTA-NAc shell dopaminergic output, and this underlies motivation to lever press for a motivationally neutral visual stimulus. (via Semantic Scholar)
