Creation of a Pair of Stereochemically Complementary Biocatalysts

Journal of the American Chemical Society, 128(50), 16238–16247.

By: G. Williams*, T. Woodhall*, L. Farnsworth*, A. Nelson* & A. Berry*

MeSH headings : Aldehydes / chemistry; Biomimetic Materials / chemistry; Biomimetic Materials / metabolism; Catalysis; Evolution, Molecular; Genetic Variation / genetics; Kinetics; Lyases / chemistry; Lyases / genetics; Lyases / metabolism; Models, Molecular; Molecular Structure; Mutation / genetics; N-Acetylneuraminic Acid / chemistry; N-Acetylneuraminic Acid / metabolism; Stereoisomerism
TL;DR: Direct evolution was used to create a pair of stereochemically complementary variant NALs for the synthesis of sialic acid mimetics, and since residues identified as critical for stereoselectivity are conserved among members of the NAL superfamily, the approach might be extended to the evolution of other useful biocatalysts for the stereoselectedive synthesis of biologically active molecules. Responses to selection for partial resistance to crown rust in oat

Crop Science, 46(3), 1260–1265.

TL;DR: The results suggested that index selection could increase levels of crown rust resistance, grain yield, and seed weight simultaneously, and predicted and realized heritabilities for area under disease progress curve (AUDPC) were consistent with predicted herit abilities. Contributors: L. Robertson n, C. Kleinschmidt*, D. White*, G. Payne n, C. Maragos* & J. Holland n

TL;DR: Moderate to high heritabilities and strong genetic correlations between ear rot and fumonisin concentration suggest that selection for reduced ear rot should frequently identify lines with reduced fumoniin concentration. (via Semantic Scholar)
