1995 journal article

Male-specific lethal 2, a dosage compensation gene of Drosophila, undergoes sex-specific regulation and encodes a protein with a RING finger and a metallothionein-like cysteine cluster.

The EMBO Journal, 14(12), 2884–2895.

By: S. Zhou*, Y. Yang*, M. Scott*, A. Pannuti*, K. Fehr*, A. Eisen*, E. Koonin*, D. Fouts* ...

TL;DR: The observations suggest that MSL‐2 may be the target of the master regulatory gene Sxl and provide the basic elements of a working hypothesis on the function of MSl‐2 in mediating the 2‐fold increase in transcription that is characteristic of dosage compensation. (via Semantic Scholar)

1995 journal article

A second superoxide dismutase gene in the medfly, Ceratitis capitata.

Genetics, 140(2), 697–702.

By: G. Banks, A. Robinson, J. Kwiatowski, F. Ayala, M. Scott* & D. Kriticou

TL;DR: Phylogenetic analysis by the maximum parsimony method with bootstrap resampling of previously known Cu/Zn SOD reveals two monophyletic groups, vertebrates and insects, which suggests that the duplication detected in Ceratitis is ancient, perhaps as old as the origins of the arthropod phylum in the Cambrian more than 500 million years ago. Managing the Evolution of Insect Resistance to Transgenic Plants

Science, 268(5219), 1894–1896.

By: D. Alstad* & D. Andow*

TL;DR: Computer simulation indicates that a strategy that exploits corn borer preferences and movements can delay the evolution of resistance and reduce insect damage in the untreated fields of a patchwork planting regime. (via Semantic Scholar)

1995 journal article

Limitations of Trichogramma nubilale (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) as an Inundative Biological Control of Ostrinia nubilalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

Environmental Entomology, 24(5), 1352–1357.

By: D. Andow*, G. Klacan*, D. Bach* & T. Leahy*

TL;DR: A meta-analysis of results and several published experimental releases indicated that the major limitation in using T. nubilale as an inundative biological control in sweet corn was high variability in the relation between release rates and egg mass parasitism rates, and that there was no evidence of density-dependent larval mortality. Lack of effect of retinoic acid and fluocinolone acetonide on mirex tumor promotion indicates a novel mirex mechanism

Carcinogenesis, 16(9), 2199–2204.

By: T. Kim n & R. Smart n

MeSH headings : 9,10-Dimethyl-1,2-benzanthracene / toxicity; Animals; Anticarcinogenic Agents / therapeutic use; Base Sequence; Carcinogens / toxicity; Cell Division / drug effects; Drug Interactions; Ear, External / drug effects; Edema / chemically induced; Edema / drug therapy; Female; Fluocinolone Acetonide / therapeutic use; Genes, ras / drug effects; Genotype; Mice; Mice, Inbred Strains; Mirex / antagonists & inhibitors; Mirex / toxicity; Molecular Sequence Data; Papilloma / chemically induced; Papilloma / prevention & control; Skin Neoplasms / chemically induced; Skin Neoplasms / prevention & control; Tetradecanoylphorbol Acetate / toxicity; Tretinoin / therapeutic use
TL;DR: Results indicate that the promotional activity of mirex, as well as its weak proliferative response, result from a distinct promoter mechanism and/or that mireX promotes a unique population of epidermal cells that are insensitive to FA and RA and cannot be distinguished by their mutant Ha-ras genotype.
