TI - Neutron Scattering Cross Sections from ^{14}N and ^{9}Be at 11, 14, and 17 MeV

AB - Neutron scattering cross sections were measured for /sup 14/N and /sup 9/Be at incident neutron energies of 11, 14, and 17 MeV using time-of-flight methods. Angular distributions for /sup 14/N and /sup 9/Be elastic scattering and /sup 9/Be inelastic scattering to the 2.429-MeV excited state were obtained betwee 20 and 160 deg in 5-deg increments. The data were corrected for finite geometry effects using a Monte Carlo simulation code. Lengendre polynomial coefficients deduced by fitting the experimental data are tabulated. The results of a spherical optical model analysis for the /sup 14/N data are reported. Coulomb correction terms are obtained from a comparison of neutron and proton elastic scattering data for /sup 14/N.

TI - Modeling of defects in amorphous semiconductors: Threefold coordination in a-Si:H

AB - Defects in a-Si:H are modeled by embedding a small “defect cluster” in a crystalline Si matrix. Electronic structure calculations for threefold coordinated Si, P, B, Ga and Al are carried out using the Green's function method. The electronic U for the Si dangling bond is in good agreement with the experimental data for a dangling bond related defect. The threefold coordinated P is found to be electrically inactive, while the threefold coordinated B, Ga and Al all have a level in the gap. The positions their respective levels, suggest that Ga or Al may be better acceptor dopants than B.

We make a detailed numerical study of this analytic model for hard dumbells, including comparisons with the true Percus-Yevick results, and find that it is surprisingly effective.

AB - The microstructure of two-phase disordered media can be characterised in terms of a set of n-point matrix probability functions S, which give the probability of finding n points all in the matrix phase. We obtain, for the first time, an exact analytical expression for S, for a distribution of equi-sized rigid rods in a matrix at any density and for all values of its argument. We evaluate, also for the first time, Sz for a distribution of equi-sized rigid discs in a matrix, for a wide range of densities. Using these results for S, and rigorous upper and lower bounds on S3, one may obtain bounds on S, for distributions of rigid rods and discs. The one- and two-dimensional results obtained here are compared to the three-dimensional results of Torquato and Stell at certain particle volume fractions.

AB - Several models of boron neutralized by atomic hydrogen in silicon were tested by secondary ion mass spectrometry and infrared spectrometry. The hydrogen concentration is comparable to that of boron. Boron neutralization appears as a drop in free-carrier absorption and as an increase in resistivity. A new infrared vibrational mode attributed to 〈111〉 vibrations of H tied to Si appears at 1875 cm−1.
