AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HUMAN GENETICS, 63(5), 1531–1540.

By: D. Nielsen n, M. Ehm* & B. Weir n

MeSH headings : Alleles; Genes, Recessive; Genetic Diseases, Inborn / genetics; Genetic Markers; Genetic Predisposition to Disease; Heterozygote; Humans; Linkage Disequilibrium; Models, Genetic; Models, Statistical
TL;DR: It does not follow that the usual measures of linkage disequilibrium are zero, given disease heterogeneity, and care is needed in the drawing of inferences from marker Hardy-Weinberg disequilibria for disease-susceptibility loci with more than two alleles. (via Semantic Scholar)

Density-dependent prenatal androgen exposure as an endogenous mechanism for the generation of cycles in small mammal populations

JOURNAL OF THEORETICAL BIOLOGY, 190(1), 93–106.

TL;DR: A mathematical model is developed and analysed to investigate the possible role of prenatal androgen exposure in the generation of limit cycles and shows that limit cycles depend on three parameters: the delay between birth and sexual maturation, the slope of the function that relates average prenatal androgens exposure to total population density, and the difference between the maximum birth rates of the low- and high-androgen exposed females. Biometrika, 85(1), 1–11.

Contributors: A. Gelfand* & S. Ghosh n

TL;DR: A predictive criterion where the goal is good prediction of a replicate of the observed data but tempered by fidelity to the observed values is proposed, which is obtained by minimising posterior loss for a given model. (via Semantic Scholar)

Marker selection for the transmission/disequilibrium test, in recently admixed populations

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HUMAN GENETICS, 62(3), 703–712.

MeSH headings : Alleles; Gene Frequency; Genetics, Population; Humans; Linkage Disequilibrium; Models, Genetic
TL;DR: The consequences of collapsing a microsatellite into a two-allele marker are examined, and it is found that if there is random mating in the admixed population, then typically there is a collapsing for which the power of the TDT is greater than that for the original micros Satellite marker. Investigations of the problems of assessing aflatoxin levels in peanuts

BIOMETRICS, 54(2), 739–753.

author keywords: aflatoxin concentration; compound gamma; modeling; negative binomial
TL;DR: A number of probability distributions that have been used to model the occurrence of aflatoxin in peanuts are compared and two distributions, the compound gamma and the negative binomial, are shown to have special appeal in that both can be justified by reasoning from the fundamental biological and stochastic processes that generate the a Flatoxin. Higher temporal variability of forest breeding bird communities in fragmented landscapes

PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 95(13), 7497–7501.

By: T. Boulinier n, J. Nichols n, J. Hines n, . Sauer n, C. Flather n & K. Pollock n

TL;DR: It is shown that forest fragmentation was associated not only with a reduced number of forest bird species, but also with increased temporal variability in the number of species, and higher temporal variability was associated with higher local extinction and turnover rates.
