AU - DeCuir, Jessica T. T2 - Educational Psychologist AB - This article examines some of the theoretical foundations on which future inquiry on emotions in education may proceed. The study of emotions has a lot of promise in informing the understanding of teaching, motivation, and self-regulated learning; however, it also indicates that inquiry on emotions presents a number of potential challenges. First, the article discusses assumptions about the nature of reality, the nature of the knower, and knowledge that guides the study of emotions. Then, there is a discussion of theoretical views on the nature of emotions that emerge from assumptions about reality and knowledge. Next, the article discusses potential approaches for investigating emotions that have emerged from beliefs about the nature of emotions and assumptions about reality and knowledge. Finally, the article discusses some potential directions for future inquiry on emotions in education. The article also suggests that as this area of inquiry matures, the continual examination of the theoretical foundations on which inquiry on emotions in education is based is seen as fundamental to the healthy development of this research community. Survey interviews and focus group follow‐ups with civil servants participating in graduate training programs at the Russian Academy of Public Service provide information about their preferred mode of ethical reasoning; the demographic, attitudinal, organizational, and professional factors associated with that reasoning; and the behavioral choices implied. Using a sample of 113 public officials who represent a broad spectrum of regions in Russia, this study assesses moral reasoning, examines variables associated with alternative models, and compares these responses with findings from studies conducted in Poland and the United States. Based on this exploratory study, we suggest implications for theory, research, and practice. The main purpose of the SAED is to assist in identifying children with emotional disturbance by operationally defining ED as stated in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997. The first study investigated the long-term test—retest reliability of the SAED over a 7-month period. The second study examined the convergent validity of the SAED by comparing it with several subscales of the Systematic Screening for Behavior Disorders, a multigate screening system to identify children at risk of behavior problems. The results indicate that the SAED is a reliable and valid instrument for identifying young children who may qualify for the federal definition of ED. G. AU - Pope, C. A. T2 - Reading Research and Instruction AB - Abstract The primary question that guided this year‐long study was “To what degree do student teachers use principles and methods from their university‐based methods class in their student teaching experiences?” To respond to this question, the secondary English methods class was studied, and the prevailing theme and concepts were identified as points of emphasis. The student teaching experience in secondary English was explored through case studies of four students from the methods class. An analysis of the data revealed that the methods class and the methods professor matter, as do the student teachers’ own personal themes, which became their guiding teaching principles.
