Some of the main ones are shown in Fig. 1. The rod-like model describes polymer molecules as rigid cylinders with high axis ratio. The axis ratio, X, is equal to the length of the polymer divided by the diameter. X = L/d for molecules in any conformation. Linear polymer chains that are not completely rod-like can be described by Kuhn chains, worm-like chains, or segmented rod-like and random coil chains. Kuhn chains are characterized by rigid segments connected by universal joints. The rod-like segment, known as the Kuhn segment, has a characteristic length, 2q. Worm-like chains have continuous deviation from rod-like behavior but are not necessarily completely flexible. The worm-like chains are characterized by a persistence length, q. Polymers of types a-d in Fig. 1 can all form liquid crystalline solutions under appropriate conditions. The final type of chain, the random coil, is not expected to form liquid crystalline solutions. The motion of the yarn between the unwind point (where it first starts to slip across the package surface before flying into the unwinding balloon) and the guide eye located on the package axis is analysed. The motion is periodic as the unwind point moves backwards and forwards along the length of the package surface. In 1958 D. G. Padfield argued that, provided the helix angle is small, the time derivative terms in the equations of motion can be neglected and the problem can be reduced to a stationary (relative to rotating axes) balloon problem subject to a modified boundary condition at the unwind point. The problem of yarn slipping across the package surface has also been investigated by D. G. Padfield and by H. V. Booth. In the present paper a regular perturbation expansion is used to provide a theoretical framework for Padfield’s ideas and to remove the time dependence from the zero order equations of motion. To this order of approximation the time dependence appears in the ‘moving’ boundary condition at the unwind point. A new derivation of this boundary condition is given and a set of continuity conditions between the yarn slipping on the package and the yarn in the balloon is used to splice the two solutions together so that the package can be unwound through a complete period of the unwinding cycle. In order to facilitate the process of designing suitable clothing for protection against such brief high energy exposures, it would be desirable to have an apparatus and test method that could simulate this type of exposure in a routine laboratory environment. This paper reports a major step forward in the design of such testing equipment. The Manitoba Electric Arc TPP (MEAT) tester can reproduce a pre-set arc power with an accuracy of ±5% and deliver incident flux densities in the range of 12–84 kW/m2 (0.3–2.0 cal/cm2.s). Through the use of specially designed software the apparatus will automatically calculate and report the protection time and TPP rating of single fabrics, multilayer assemblies and clothing components. The MEAT tester and proposed test method are currently being considered for incorporation into an ASTM standard. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least squares to R = 0.0442 for 1115 independent reflections. This monoazo dye possesses a planar azobenzene skeleton, as the dihedral angle between the planes made by the two aromatic rings is 1.5°. The non-bonding distance between the hydrogen atom of the acetamido group and azo nitrogen N(1) is well within the expected distance for intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Interestingly, the chloro and acetamido groups lie on the same side of the azo bond, and each unit cell of this dye contains 8 molecules. We apply image covariance, a digital implementation of mathematical morphology, to binary carpet images for the purpose of measuring aspects of texture periodicity. Our test materials consist of four kinds of double ply wool carpets of differing textures divided into control, light, and heavy wear samples. Video images were digitized by a True Vision Vista frame grabber. Gray-level images were histogram equalized and converted to binary. Covariance data allow one to measure period frequency, amplitude, and overall mean. Results for our carpet samples show changes in amplitude and mean with wear, and are consistent with findings for a previous paper using grey level co-occurrence analysis. Covariance analysis requires relatively minimal computation for processing and preprocessing, but results may be affected by loss of gray level gradient information. If textural features of interest are preserved, this method is an efficient and easily implemented alternative to co-occurrence analysis. Attention is also given to the covariance analysis of computer generated carpet-like textures. We attempt to duplicate the covariance behavior of our carpet series by altering the placement of the component texture objects and simulate carpet wear by degrading regular textures with noise. We offer some thoughts on modeling carpet texture appearance loss with the aid of simulated texture images. This is an important practical consideration, since garment manufacturing frequently involves the sewing of two fabric plies of completely different and constantly changing bias angles — none of which is along the grain line. Examines the variations in the properties of five woven materials, all lightweight and commonly used in women's summer apparel. The Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) was used to measure the mechanical and surface properties of strips, cut at different angles, from the test materials. To investigate the effect of orientation on seam quality, two plies cut from the same fabric but at different angles were sewn together under selected conditions. The resulting seams were characterized for seam quality using AATCC standards. It was found that dichloroacetic acid is an effective solvent for both the diazotization of the title compounds and the synthesis of important commercial disperse dyes based on these amines. Dyes such as C.I. Disperse Red 177 and Disperse Violet 52 were readily obtained in 85–90% yield and very pure form. T2 - Journal of Investigative Surgery AB - Myxalin is a glycopeptide extracted recently from a gram-negative bacterium. It has blood anticoagulant properties and can enhance endothelial cell growth. With the ultimate objective of using this bioactive molecule to promote vascular graft healing, this study assessed its biocompatibility in vivo by comparing the cellular and immunological responses of gelatin-coated knitted polyester grafts with and without myxalin following implantation in the peritoneal cavity of rats for prescheduled periods of 3 days and 1, 2, and 4 weeks. A nongelatin-coated virgin polyester graft was included as the reference material. The biological response to gelatin alone was characterized by a slower rate of cellular infiltration into the implant, reduced collagen synthesis, and higher levels of acid phosphatase and esterase activity in the surrounding tissue. The addition of myxalin to this coating resulted in a significant reduction of hydrolase secretion in the tissue surrounding the implant and an enhancement of cellular ingrowth. Results confirmed the presence of extractable TDAs and other impurities in the foam covering the unused Même prosthesis, and that the concentrations of these impurities could be significantly reduced by washing the foam in a regular detergent. This washing step was omitted from the manufacturer's production process. Furthermore, on exposure to mild alkalis, the foam exhibited significant degradation, rapid fragmentation, loss of mechanical strength and physical integrity, as well as the release of additional TDAs. Because of the potential long-term risks associated with the release of TDAs in vivo, continued clinical use of the Même prosthesis containing this particular type of foam appears questionable. Compositions for incipience of mesophase formation and for wholly anisotropic phase formation have been determined and relevant phase diagrams constructed. The biphasic gap narrowed when the solvent composition approached 75.5 weight percent NH 4 SCN and as the cellulose concentration decreased. As solvent composition was changed, the minimum cellulose volume fraction for mesophase formation ranged between 0.02 to 0.045. The polyurethane materials tested were: Vascugraft (fibrous, open pore structure); commercial Hydrophilic Mitrathane prosthesis (high porosity, smooth surface, non-permeable, closed pore structure); experimental hydrophobic Mitrathane (less porosity but a fibrous, open pore structure, similar to Vascugraft). The commercial expanded polytetrafluoroethylene prostheses Impra and reinforced GORETEX were included as controls on account of their extensive clinical application in the femoropopliteal position. After 5 d incubation at 37 degrees C biocompatibility was assessed in terms of average area of migrating cells on the biomaterial, total number of cells surrounding the explant and level of adhesion between the cells and the biomaterial. The Vascugraft prosthesis promoted the growth of a continuous monolayer of cells on its surface. This behaviour was equivalent to Impra and reinforced GORETEX materials in terms of cell density and area of cell migration but appeared to be superior for cell adhesion. From a second series of cell culture tests, in which the extractables leached from the biomaterials were added to the nutrient medium, it was concluded that none of the biomaterials tested released cytotoxic contaminants. AU - Hamouda, H. AU - Shin, D. H. T2 - TEXTILE RESEARCH JOURNAL AB - The relationship between various parameters of roll making, fabric properties, and the resultant stresses developed within a fabric roll has been discussed in Parts I and II of this series. A discrete continuum model was used to describe fabric deformation during roll making. In the present model, the fabric is assumed to be in plane stress state and the effect in the filling direction is entirely neglected. The fabric is considered as anisotropic in warp and thickness directions. The effect of fabric viscoelasticity in the warp direction is also considered. A simple two-term Maxwell viscoelastic model is used to describe the fabric viscoelastic behavior. The stress relaxation process within fabric rolls during and after roll formation is discussed through numerical examples. The machine reacted to step changes in fiber length and settled into positions close to those recommended by the machine manufacturer for the particular fibers. An expert-system type of control was used. It involved integration of fast Fourier transforms over limited band widths and the use of progressive perturbations of the ratch with decisions being made using logic elements at each control cycle. The control cycles were reasonably rapid. The middle and back rolls were driven by stepping motors with electronic controls replacing the traditional gearing. Two kinds of analyses were performed: subjective overall handle and primary sensory factors were evaluated using a 99 point polar-word scale, and physical and thermal properties were characterized using the Kawabata evaluation system. Regression analysis was used to relate subjective and objective measurements. The handle of single knits was strongly related to the perception of softness and lightness; the handle of double knits was influenced by the perception of slickness and tightness. Surface friction and weight were associated with the hand ranking of single knits. Fabric surface roughness and bending hysteresis were physical properties that correlated with the hand ranking for double knits. The handle of plain knit loop structures was rated better than that of tuck-loop knits. For summer T-shirt material, single jersey was the preferred choice; for winter sportswear, interlock knits were preferred to other double knits.
