AB - An inverse eigenvalue problem, where a matrix is to be constructed from some or all of its eigenvalues, may not have a real-valued solution at all. An approximate solution in the sense of least squares is sometimes desirable. Two types of least squares problems are formulated and explored in this paper. In spite of their different appearance, the two problems are shown to be equivalent. Thus one new numerical method, modified from the conventional alternating projection method, is proposed. The method converges linearly and globally and can be used to generate good starting values for other faster but more expensive and locally convergent methods. The idea can be applied to multiplicative inverse eigenvalue problems for the purpose of preconditioning. Numerical examples are presented.

AB - We propose a model mechanism for the initiation and spatial positioning of teeth primordia in the alligator,Alligator mississippiensis. Detailed embryological studies by Westergaard & Ferguson (1986, 1987, 1990) show that jaw growth plays a crucial role in the developmental patterning of the tooth initiation process. Based on biological data we develop a reaction-diffusion mechanism, which crucially includes domain growth. The model can reproduce the spatial pattern development of the first seven teeth primordia in the lower half jaw ofA. mississippiensis. The results for the precise spatio-temporal sequence compare well with detailed developmental experiments.

AB - A susceptible-infected-recovered-susceptible (SIRS) model of the epidemiology of feline leukemia virus is formulated and analysed. The dynamics of the disease are dramatically different in no-risk, low-risk and high-risk subpopulations of asocial, free roaming, and multiple cat household cats. Among low risk (<1% prevalence) free roaming cats, the model predicts that an effective immunization rate of 4% year-1, or an effective removal rate of 8% year-1 are adequate to control the disease completely. Under higher risk (10% prevalence) conditions, an effective immunization rate of 23-72% year-1 or a removal rate of 69-145% year-1 are required for control. At very high (30%) prevalence rates, even heroic measures may not suffice to substantially reduce disease prevalence: a vaccination rate of 100% year-1 even if attainable, would only slightly reduce disease prevalence from 30% to 29%. We conclude that the current estimated effective feline leukemia virus immunization rate of 11-19% of the general population is inadequate to provide herd immunity in the subpopulation of cats which are genuinely at risk of infection. A substantial increase in the vaccination rate and/or intensification of test and removal efforts in the at risk population would be required to attain an effective level of protection.

AB - The equations of motion for two-dimensional deformations of an incompressible elastoplastic material involve five equations, two equations expressing conservation of momentum, and three constitutive laws, which we take in the rate form, i.e. relating the stress rate to the strain rate. In hypoplasticity, the constitutive laws are homogeneous of degree one in the stress and strain rates. This property has the consequence that although the equations are not in conservation form, there is nonetheless a natural way to characterize planar shock waves. The Riemann problem is the initial value problem for plane waves, in which the initial data for stress and velocity consist of two constant vectors separated by a single discontinuity. The main result is that, under appropriate assumptions, the Riemann problem has a scale invariant piecewise constant solution. The issue of uniqueness is left unresolved. Indeed, we give an example satisfying the conditions for existence, for which there are many solutions. Using asymptotics, we show how solutions of the Riemann problem are approximated by smooth solutions of a system regularized by the addition of viscous terms that preserve the property of scale invariance.

AB - A practically efficient algorithm for analyzing the topology of plane real algebraic curves is given. Given a bivariate polynomial, the algorithm produces a planar graph which is topologically equivalent to the real variety of the polynomial on the Euclidean plane. The method does not require the expensive computations of g.c.d., divisions, and root bounds of polynomials with real algebraic number coefficients. Further, it utilizes floating point arithmetic and interval arithmetic whenever possible. Experiments show that most benchmark curves found in the literature can be analyzed within a few seconds on a workstation. Timings on randomly generated polynomials also indicate that the algorithm is efficient to be useful in practice.

AB - This paper presents two nonlinear examples of mechanical systems. The first example is a simple inverted pendulum, the second example is a simplified bicycle model. In Maple, using the Euler Lagrange equations, we compute the equations of motion. We have shown how to use the interface to transfer the equations to Scilab for simulation or control. We have shown that for dealing with complex models, we need the full power of Maple to perform change of variables which cannot be automatized since they require a deep a priori knowledge of the model.

AB - The Immersed Interface Method proposed by LeVeque and Li [1] is extended to three-dimensional elliptic equations of the form: ∇·(β(x)∇u(x))+κ(x)u(x)=f(x). We study the situation in which there is an irregular interface (surface) S contained in the solution domain across which β, κ and f may be discontinuous or even singular. As a result, the solution u will usually be nonsmooth or even discontinuous. A finite difference approach with a uniform Cartesian grid is used in the discretization. Local truncation error analysis is performed to estimate the accuracy of the numerical solution.

AB - Spatial heterogeneity is believed to play an important role in the persistence and dynamics of epidemics of childhood diseases because asynchrony between populations within different regions allows global persistence, even if the disease dies out locally. A simple multi-patch (metapopulation) model for spatial heterogeneity in epidemics is analysed and we examine conditions under which patches become synchronised. We show that the patches in non-seasonal deterministic models often oscillate in phase for all but the weakest between patch coupling. Synchronisation is also seen for stochastic models, although slightly stronger coupling is needed to overcome the random effects. We demonstrate that the inclusion of seasonal forcing in deterministic models can lead to the maintenance of phase differences between patches. Complex dynamic behaviour is observed in the seasonally forced spatial model, along with the coexistence of many different behaviours. Compared to the non-spatial model, chaotic solutions are observed for weaker seasonal forcing; these solutions have a more realistic minimum number of infectives.

AB - Results from an extensive study on the robustness of an H∞ compensator for a 2-D structural acoustic model are presented. The effects of frequency uncertainties in an exogenous signal are studied for both the case where the signal is contained in the controller formulation and the case where it is excluded. Delays are inserted in the input and/or output signals and their effect on the controller performance is recorded. A comparison between the standard LQG/Kalman filter and the H∞/Min-Max compensator reveals no significant differences in the overall controller performance. Modifications in the controller structure are studied to see whether loss of information (the tracking variable) that must be calculated a priori would result in performance degradation. This study provides valuable insight into the computational and implementational issues that arise when dealing with the control of large and complex systems that are governed by partial differential equations.

In order to adapt such a decomposition to the signal being analyzed, it may be pertinent to maximize an energy concentration criterion, which leads to a constrained optimization problem. A simple geometric interpretation of this problem is given, and an alternating projection method is proposed to solve it.

AB - Image recovery is a broad discipline that encompasses the large body of inverse problems, in which an image h is to be inferred from the observation of data x consisting of signals physically or mathematically related to it. Image restoration and image reconstruction are the two main sub-branches of image recovery. The term “image restoration” usually applies to the problem of estimating the original form h of a degraded image x. The following four basic elements are required to solve an image recovery problem: (1) a data formation model, (2) a priori information, (3) a recovery criterion, and (4) a solution method. The recovery criterion defines the class of images that are acceptable as solutions to the problem. It is chosen by the user on grounds that may include experience, compatibility with the available a priori knowledge, personal convictions on the best way to solve the problem, and ease of implementation. The traditional approach has been to use a criterion of optimality, which usually leads to a single best solution. An alternative approach is to use a criterion of feasibility, in which consistency with all prior information and the data defines a set of equally acceptable solutions. The solution method is a numerical algorithm that will produce a solution to the recovery problem—that is, an image that satisfies the recovery criterion. Modification can be made in two directions: in the conventional image recovery framework, one seeks to preserve the notion of an optimal solution, whereas in the set theoretic framework the emphasis is placed on feasibility.

AB - Spatial heterogeneity is believed to play an important role in the persistence and dynamics of epidemics of childhood diseases because asynchrony between populations within different regions allows global persistence, even if the disease dies out locally. A simple multi-patch (metapopulation) model for spatial heterogeneity in epidemics is analysed and we examine conditions under which patches become synchronised. We show that the patches in non-seasonal deterministic models often oscillate in phase for all but the weakest between patch coupling. Synchronisation is also seen for stochastic models, although slightly stronger coupling is needed to overcome the random effects. We demonstrate that the inclusion of seasonal forcing in deterministic models can lead to the maintenance of phase differences between patches. Complex dynamic behaviour is observed in the seasonally forced spatial model, along with the coexistence of many different behaviours. Compared to the non-spatial model, chaotic solutions are observed for weaker seasonal forcing; these solutions have a more realistic minimum number of infectives.

AB - A feedback control computational methodology for reducing acoustic sound pressure levels in a two-dimensional cavity with a flexible boundary (a beam) is investigated. The control is implemented in this model through voltages to piezoceramic patches on the beam which are excited in a manner (out-of-phase) so as to produce pure bending moments. The incorporation of the output feedback control in this system leads to a problem with unbounded input and output terms. By writing the resulting system as an abstract Cauchy equation, the problem of reducing interior pressure levels can be posed in the context of an H/sub /spl infin///MinMax time-domain state-space formulation. A summary of extensive computational efforts comparing output feedback to full state feedback and investigating the effect of the number and location of sensors on performance of the control is presented.

AB - We present a qualitative model for the convergence behaviour of the Generalised Minimal Residual (GMRES) method for solving nonsingular systems of linear equationsAx =b in finite and infinite dimensional spaces. One application of our methods is the solution of discretised infinite dimensional problems, such as integral equations, where the constants in the asymptotic bounds are independent of the mesh size. Our model provides simple, general bounds that explain the convergence of GMRES as follows: If the eigenvalues ofA consist of a single cluster plus outliers then the convergence factor is bounded by the cluster radius, while the asymptotic error constant reflects the non-normality ofA and the distance of the outliers from the cluster. If the eigenvalues ofA consist of several close clusters, then GMRES treats the clusters as a single big cluster, and the convergence factor is the radius of this big cluster. We exhibit matrices for which these bounds are tight. Our bounds also lead to a simpler proof of existing r-superlinear convergence results in Hilbert space.

AB - In this paper we show how the properties of integral operators and their approximations are reflected in the performance of the GMRES iteration and how these properties can be used to smooth the GMRES iterates by an implicit application of Nyström interpolation, thereby strengthening the norm in which convergence takes place. The smoothed iteration has very similar properties to Broyden’s method. We present an example to illustrate the ideas.

AB - A methodology for estimating physical parameters in a class of structural acoustic systems is presented. The general model under consideration consists of an interior cavity which is separated from an exterior disturbance by an enclosing elastic structure. Piezoceramic patches are bonded to or embedded in the structure; these can be used both as actuators and sensors in applications ranging from the control of interior noise levels to the determination of structural flaws through nondestructive evaluation techniques. The presence and excitation of the patches, however, changes the geometry and material properties of the structure as well as involves unknown patch parameters, thus necessitating the development of parameter estimation techniques which are applicable in this coupled setting. In developing a framework for approximation, parameter estimation and implementation, strong consideration is given to the fact that the input operator is unbonded due to the discrete nature of the patches. Moreover, the model is weakly nonlinear as a result of the coupling mechanism between the structural vibrations and the interior acoustic dynamics. Within this context, an illustrating model is given, well-posedness and approximation results are discussed and an applicable parameter estimation methodology is presented. The scheme is then illustrated through several numerical examples with simulations modeling a variety of commonly used structural acoustic techniques for system excitation and data collection.

AB - We numerically integrate the compressible Navier-Stokes equations by means of a finite volume technique on the domain exterior to an airfoil. The curvilinear grid we use for discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations is obviously finite, it covers only a certain bounded region around the airfoil, consequently, we need to set some artificial boundary conditions at the external boundary of this region. The artificial boundary conditions we use here are non-local in space. They are constructed specifically for the case of steady-state solution. In constructing the artificial boundary conditions, we linearize the Navier-Stokes equations around the far-field solution and apply the difference potentials method. The resulting global conditions are implemented together with a pseudotime multigrid iteration procedure for achieving the steady state. The main goal of this paper is to describe the numerical procedure itself, therefore, we primarily emphasize the computation of artificial boundary conditions and the combined usage of these artificial boundary conditions and the original algorithm for integrating the Navier-Stokes equations. The underlying theory that justifies the proposed numerical techniques will accordingly be addressed more briefly.

AB - In this paper, new a posteriors error estimates for the shock-capturing streamline diffusion (SCSD) method and the shock-capturing discontinuous galerkin (SCDG) method for scalar conservation laws are obtained. These estimates are then used to prove that the SCSD method and the SCDG method converge to the entropy solution with a rate of at least $h^{{1 / 8}} $ and $h^{{1 / 8}} $, respectively, in the $L^\infty (L^1 )$-norm. The triangulations are made of general acute simplices and the approximate solution is taken to be piecewise a polynomial of degree k. The result is independent of the dimension of the space.

AB - Abstract In dealing with the central extensions of a finite group G one finds that although covers need not be isomorphic, for each such H there exists a cover for which H is a. homomorphic image [1]. For finite dimensional Lie algebras, covers are isomorphic. We shall show that the second property also holds for Lie algebras. Thus to find all such extensions one needs to compute the cover and consider ideals contained in the multiplier (kernel of the homomorphism). Several examples are constructed. Our Lie algebras are taken over a field.
