Comparison of sinking velocity, swimming velocity, rotation and path characteristics among six marine dinoflagellate species

Marine Biology, 113(2), 319–328.

By: D. Kamykowski n, R. Reed n & G. Kirkpatrick*

TL;DR: Observations of decreasing cell rotation:translation ratio and increasing cell drag with increasing cell size supported the hypothesis that the dinoflagellate flagellar apparatus generates maximum swimming velocity at intermediate cell sizes, but an alternate analysis supported the hypotheses that swimming velocity increases with cell size. NEW PHANTOM DINOFLAGELLATE IS THE CAUSATIVE AGENT OF MAJOR ESTUARINE FISH KILLS

NATURE, 358(6385), 407–410.

By: J. Burkholder n, E. Noga n, C. Hobbs n & H. Glasgow n

MeSH headings : Animals; Dinoflagellida / physiology; Dinoflagellida / ultrastructure; Fishes / physiology; Marine Toxins / toxicity; Microscopy, Electron, Scanning; North Carolina
TL;DR: A new toxic dinoflagellate with 'phantom-like' behaviour that has been iden-tified as the causative agent of a significant portion of the fish kills in these estuaries is described, and which may also be active in other geographic regions. (via Semantic Scholar)
