The archaeology of the Byzantine Period used to be "too late" for those interested in the Biblical periods and "too early" for those scholars specialized in the remains of Islamic civilization. Now that situation has been totally transformed by a wide-ranging burst of archaeological energy involving a broad range of specialists and perspectives. In his detailed summary of the main currents and fruits of research into the material remains of Byzantine Palestine, Tom Parker begins his historical review with Diocletian to provide a more well-founded sense of the political processes that shaped the transformation of culture in the region. A summary of significant inscriptions and the implications to be drawn from the sophisticated archaeological surveys that have been accomplished in recent years leads to a review of excavations, including that new focus on smaller, rural settlements. Then the treatment shifts to the architecture, pottery and other material remains that have now been recovered, concluding with an evaluation of the impact of archaeological research on historical understandings of the period. AU - Banker, , JR T2 - AMERICAN HISTORICAL REVIEW AB - Hospitals were broadly conceived in the Middle Ages as establishments that received pilgrims and travelers, tended to the poor, and, with the professionalization of medicine, increasingly came to provide care to the sick and dying. In Charity and Welfare, James Brodman surveys the networks of hospitals and charitable institutions in medieval Catalonia that gave food to the hungry, dowries to indigent women, shelter to the homeless, and palliative care to the ill. The book shows how, just as contemporary society struggles with the issues of welfare reform, managed health care, and assistance to the elderly, so did the people of the Middle Ages deal with questions of who to help and what criteria to use to make those decisions. In their assessments, they made a clear distinction between charity, aid given gratuitously and indiscriminately to others, and welfare, assistance targeted toward certain groups for particular, desired ends. The author concludes that Catalan hospitals depended upon the close collaboration of church and state, a mixture of voluntary and public funding, and a combination of religious and secular values. The Railways served both Southern and Northern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe and Zambia), and the system was the region's transportation backbone and largest single employer. This is the second part of a two-part article seeking to provide a far more comprehensive account of the strike than has heretofore appeared. Part I was a detailed narrative account of the strike's unfolding. Part II seeks to illuminate the strike's cause, rooted in the railway workers' experience, and to place the event in its historical context. Though contemporary observers may have overstated the strike's transformative power, it deserves its place as one of the region's most dramatic episodes of resistance. Campbell wrote detailed letters to family and friends about her small adventure while studying at the universities of Alabama and Mississippi and teaching at black Mississippi and South Carolina colleges from 1956 until 1965. Participant and observer, she challenged segregated bus stations, restaurants, churches, and mindsets. Along the way she met intolerant and admirable people, both famous and local. Anyone who says nothing has changed must have forgotten or never have known the daily indignities, not to mention the powerless position, of African-Americans in the South before the 1960s. Motivated to educate or remind, Campbell has collected and edited the amazing letters she wrote. They document a time and a place, as well as her observant, feeling nature. Those who have read them have noted her astute observation of race relations and her lighter vein that entertains while it teaches. During her residence in the South, she encountered racial injustice everywhere. As she proceeded with her daily activities-shopping, having her car repaired, dining in cafes and restaurants-she recognized matters that she deemed wrong. But only she and a few others dared to speak out. With her clear insight into a closed society being broken open, her collective letters to the world outside are a chronicle of the Deep South's struggle and America's quest for civil rights. Civil Rights Chronicle: Letters from the South is a storybook, an autobiography, and, for the reader seeking an eyewitness's keen documentation, a history of troubled times. Clarice T. Campbell retired from teaching in 1988. She lives in Tupelo, Mississippi.
