ROLE OF THE GYNOECIUM IN CYTOKININ-INDUCED CARNATION PETAL SENESCENCE

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR HORTICULTURAL SCIENCE, 116(4), 676–679.

By: W. Woodson* & A. Brandt

author keywords: BENZYLADENINE; DIANTHUS-CARYOPHYLLUS; ETHYLENE
TL;DR: The finding that the ethylene precursor ACC accumulates in the gynoecium before ACC accumulation or the onset of ethylene production by the petals indicates that tissue may play a role in the regulation of Ethylene production and senescence of the flower. (via Semantic Scholar)

CLONING AND NUCLEOTIDE-SEQUENCE OF A S-ADENOSYLMETHIONINE SYNTHETASE CDNA FROM CARNATION

LARSEN, P. B., & WOODSON, W. R. (1991, July). PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, Vol. 96, pp. 997–999.

By: P. Larsen & W. Woodson*

TL;DR: Carnation floral tissues, and particularly styles and petals, produce ethylene at very high rates during senescence and thus provide an excellent model to address the regulation of SAM synthetase in relation to ethylene biosynthesis, and the nucleotide sequence of a cDNA clone encoding SAM Synthetase is reported from carnation. CHARACTERIZATION OF AN ETHYLENE-REGULATED FLOWER SENESCENCE-RELATED GENE FROM CARNATION

PLANT MOLECULAR BIOLOGY, 17(1), 61–71.

By: K. Raghothama*, K. Lawton*, P. Goldsbrough* & W. Woodson*

author keywords: CARNATION; DIANTHUS-CARYOPHYLLUS; ETHYLENE-REGULATED GENE EXPRESSION; SENESCENCE
MeSH headings : Aging / genetics; Amino Acid Sequence; Base Sequence; Cloning, Molecular; DNA / isolation & purification; Ethylenes; Exons; Gene Expression Regulation; Genomic Library; Introns; Molecular Sequence Data; Nuclear Proteins / genetics; Nuclear Proteins / isolation & purification; Oligonucleotides; Plant Proteins / genetics; Plant Proteins / isolation & purification; Plants / genetics; RNA, Messenger / genetics; RNA, Messenger / isolation & purification; Single-Strand Specific DNA and RNA Endonucleases
TL;DR: A DNA-binding activity was present in nuclear extracts from both presenescent and senescing carnation petals and the upstream DNA fragments that bind this factor have sequence homology with promoter sequences of other ethylene-regulated genes. (via Semantic Scholar)

BIOTECHNOLOGY OF FLORICULTURAL CROPS

HORTSCIENCE, 26(8), 1029–1033.

By: W. Woodson*

TL;DR: The production and use of floricultural crops represents an expanding area in U.S. agriculture and efforts to improve flower crops center around quality attributes such as flower color, flower form, plant architecture, and postharvest keeping quality. (via Semantic Scholar)

A FLOWER SENESCENCE-RELATED MESSENGER-RNA FROM CARNATION SHARES SEQUENCE SIMILARITY WITH FRUIT RIPENING-RELATED MESSENGER-RNAS INVOLVED IN ETHYLENE BIOSYNTHESIS

WANG, H., & WOODSON, W. R. (1991, July). PLANT PHYSIOLOGY, Vol. 96, pp. 1000–1001.

TL;DR: The increase in ethylene biosynthesis in senescing petals would indicate mRNAs encoding ACC synthase and EFE are likely among the population of senescence-related transcripts, which are highly homologous to ripening-related cDNAs from tomato and avocado. (via Semantic Scholar)
