Interactions Among Fuel Management, Species Composition, Bark Beetles, and Climate Change and the Potential Effects on Forests of the Lake Tahoe Basin

Ecosystems, 21(4), 643–656.

By: R. Scheller*, A. Kretchun*, E. Loudermilk*, M. Hurteau*, P. Weisberg* & C. Skinner*

author keywords: net ecosystem carbon balance; bark beetles; wildfire; fuels management; climate change; Lake Tahoe Basin
TL;DR: The results provide critical insights into the interaction of drivers (bark beetles, wildfire, fuel management) that increase the risk of C loss and shifting community composition if bark beetle outbreaks become more frequent and current fuel management practices will not be effective at reducing landscape-scale outbreak mortality. TL;DR: A new regression modeling approach to estimate on-road nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOX) concentrations and near-road spatial gradients using data from a near- road monitoring network showed that the diurnal cycle of the background NO2/NOX ratios were a driving factor in the on- road and downwind NO2-NOx ratios. Integrating behaviour into the pace-of-life continuum: Divergent levels of activity and information gathering in fast- and slow-living snakes

Behavioural Processes, 142, 156–163.

By: E. Gangloff*, M. Chow*, V. Leos-Barajas*, S. Hynes*, B. Hobbs* & A. Sparkman*

MeSH headings : Animals; Colubridae / physiology; Female; Habituation, Psychophysiologic; Life Style; Male; Markov Chains; Movement / physiology; Sex Factors; Tongue / physiology
TL;DR: Evidence is offered that behaviour is an important component of co-evolved suites of traits forming a general pace-of-life continuum in this system and environmental factors experienced by the fast-living ecotype select for both increased information-gathering and activity levels to facilitate efficient responses to repeated challenges. No influence of CO2 on stable isotope analyses of soil waters with off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS)

Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, 31(5), 430–436.

TL;DR: It is found that despite the high CO2 emissions from soil samples, no need for a post‐correction of the pore water stable isotope analysis results is found, since there is no relation between CO2 concentrations and the stable isotopes results of vapor samples obtained with OA‐ICOS.
