2003 journal article

A comparison of the immune profile of commercial broiler strains when raised on marginal and high protein diets

International Journal of Poultry Science, 2(5), 300.

TL;DR: The results suggest that genetic differences exist between various commercial broiler chicken lines for cell mediated, humoral and innate immune responses, and, therefore some measures of immunocompetence could be considered as a selection criterion while selecting for performance traits. Interleukin-1 beta does not contribute to genetic strain-based differences in iNOS expression and activity in chicken macrophages

DEVELOPMENTAL AND COMPARATIVE IMMUNOLOGY, 27(2), 137–146.

By: N. Dil n & M. Qureshi n

author keywords: macrophage; lipopolysaccharide; inducible nitric oxide synthase; IL-1 beta; IL-1R(1); PCR; chicken; genetic lines
MeSH headings : Animals; Chickens; Interleukin-1 / genetics; Interleukin-1 / physiology; Lipopolysaccharides / pharmacology; Macrophages / drug effects; Macrophages / enzymology; Nitric Oxide Synthase / genetics; Nitric Oxide Synthase Type II; Nitrites / metabolism; RNA, Messenger / analysis; Receptors, Interleukin-1 / analysis; Receptors, Interleukin-1 / physiology; Species Specificity
TL;DR: Observations suggest that IL-1beta is involved in mediating LPS-induced iNOS expression and activity, and the differential response of GB1 and K-strain macrophages in terms of LPS/iNOSexpression and activity is unlikely to be modulated by IL- 1beta. (via Semantic Scholar)

A comparison of the immune response of a 2001 commercial broiler with a 1957 randombred broiler strain when fed representative 1957 and 2001 broiler diets

POULTRY SCIENCE, 82(10), 1519–1529.

author keywords: broiler; diet; genetic change; immunocompetence; sex
MeSH headings : Animal Feed; Animals; Antibody Formation; Body Weight; Breeding; Chickens / genetics; Chickens / immunology; Chickens / physiology; Diet; Erythrocytes / immunology; Female; Immunocompetence / genetics; Lymphocyte Activation / drug effects; Lymphoid Tissue / anatomy & histology; Macrophages / immunology; Male; Organ Size; Phagocytosis; Phytohemagglutinins / pharmacology; Sheep / blood; Species Specificity
TL;DR: It is suggested that genetic selection for improved broiler performance has resulted in a decrease in the adaptive arm of the immune response but an increase in the cell-mediated and inflammatory responses. (via Semantic Scholar)

Analysis of constitutive cytokine expression by pigs infected in-utero with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

VETERINARY IMMUNOLOGY AND IMMUNOPATHOLOGY, 94(1-2), 35–45.

By: W. Feng n, M. Tompkins n, J. Xu n, H. Zhang* & M. McCaw n

author keywords: porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus; cytokine; delayed type hypersensitivity; peripheral blood mononuclear cells; RT-PCR
MeSH headings : Animals; Cytokines / genetics; Cytokines / immunology; Gene Expression Regulation; Hypersensitivity, Delayed / immunology; Leukocytes, Mononuclear / immunology; Leukocytes, Mononuclear / metabolism; Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome / congenital; Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome / immunology; Porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus / immunology; Porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome virus / isolation & purification; RNA, Messenger / analysis; Swine / immunology; Swine / virology
TL;DR: It is concluded that in-utero infection with PRRSV results in significant alteration of cytokine mRNA expression that may cause transient immunomodulation, and at 10 weeks of age the pigs' immune responses seemed to recover. (via Semantic Scholar)
