TY - JOUR TI - Accelerating the onset of piscivory: intersection of predator and prey phenologies AU - Juanes, Francis AU - Buckel, Jeffrey A. AU - Conover, David O. T2 - Journal of Fish Biology AB - Piscivorous fishes tend to be able to consume other fishes early in development and generally experience a dramatic increase in growth after the ontogenetic diet shift to piscine prey. Hence, an acceleration of the onset of piscivory may be favoured strongly by natural selection. Temperate freshwater piscivores, for example, becomes piscivorous at a relatively young age by spawning in advance of, and thereby achieving a size advantage over, the young of their piscine prey. Research in various North American estuaries suggests that young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) bluefish Pomatomus saltatrix , an offshore‐spawning estuarine‐dependent marine fish, may accelerate the onset of piscivory by being advected to higher latitudes and timing their estuarine entry with the appearance of small coastal fishes. This hypothesis was tested by: (i) determining the annual recruitment date of YOY bluefish and their prey; and (ii) examining the diet and prey size preferences, and predator size‐prey size relationships, of YOY bluefish in two different estuarine systems: Great South Bay, and the lower Hudson River. Results suggest that the relationships between bluefish and their prey are determined by a complex interplay between recruitment timing of both predator and prey, prey size availability, predator selectivities, and the timing of vernal warming. It is concluded that YOY bluefish migration into northern estuaries at an advanced size provides them with a predatory size advantage over their principal piscine prey thereby facilitating an early diet shift to piscivory white minimizing the time spent as planktivores. AU - Laws, Richard A. AU - Thomas, Carrie J. T2 - Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography AB - Continental slope sediments off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, were sampled by ☐ coring in late summer, 1992. The chlorophylla concentrations measured in sediments from 16 sites at depths ranging from 530 to 2003 m averaged 19.9 mg chla m−2, a concentration much higher than observed elsewhere on the eastern U.S. continental slope, indicating high depositional rates for microalgal material. The variability in the chlorophylla values suggests strong environmental heterogeneity at both small and large spatial scales in this slope habitat, probably a consequence of both topography and bioturbation. Viable diatoms were found in sediment samples across the range of depths sampled, and up to 14 cm deep in sediments, indicating high rates of deposition and bioturbation. Bulk sediment samples contained planktonic, tychopelagic and benthic diatoms, indicating that both phytoplankton and benthic microalgae from the continental shelf may be sources of organic matter for these slope sediments. T2 - Veterinary Radiology Ultrasound AB - Thyroid scintigraphy using sodium 99m Technetium pertechnetate ( 99 TcO 4 ‐) was performed in normal and radiothyroidectomized cockatiels ( Nymphicus hollandicus ). 131 I scintigraphy was performed in the course of ablating the thyroid glands. The thyroid glands in normal birds were clearly visualized, but were not individually resolvable. Thyroid glands were not visualized in thyroid‐ablated birds. With 99m TcO 4 scans, thyroid (or other region of interest)/body count density ratios were used for comparisons of normal and thyroid‐ablated birds. Normal 99m TcO 4 ‐ thyroid/body ratios (mean +/− SD) for the dorsal and lateral views were 1.83 +/− 0.31 and 1.70 +/− 0.34 respectively. Pertechnetate thyroid/body count density ratios decreased (to 0.93 ‐/−0.14 and 0.88 +/− 0.12 for dorsal and lateral views respectively) after thyroid ablation, while crop/body ratios increased. 99m TcO 4 ‐ thyroid scintigraphy, therefore, was capable of detecting hypofunctional thyroid abnormalities in 131 I radiothyroidectomized cockatiels.
