By: J. Burkholder n, G. Hallegraeff*, G. Melia n, A. Cohen*, H. Bowers*, D. Oldach*, M. Parrow*, M. Sullivan* ...

author keywords: bacteria; ballast water exchange; harmful algae; phytoplankton; ship; transport
TL;DR: The data suggest that in general, U.S. Department of Defense ships are well managed to minimize the risk for introduction of harmful microbiota, and further treatment technologies and/or alternative management strategies will be necessary to enable DoD vessels to comply with proposed standards. Photobleaching of Dissolved Organic Material from a Tidal Marsh-Estuarine System of the Chesapeake Bay†

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 83(4), 782–792.

MeSH headings : Fluorescence; Organic Chemicals / radiation effects; Photochemistry; Seawater
TL;DR: The results illustrate that solar exposure can cause either an increase or a decrease in the CDOM absorption spectral slope, SCDOM, depending on the spectral quality of irradiation and, thus, on the parameters (e.g. atmospheric composition, concentration of UV‐absorbing water constituents) that affect the spectral characteristics of the light to which CDOM is exposed. Seasonal reliability of testosterone radioimmunoassay (RIA) for predicting sex ratios of juvenile loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles

Herpetologica, 63(3), 275–284.

By: J. Braun-McNeill, S. Epperly*, D. Owens*, L. Avens*, E. Williams* & C. Harms n

author keywords: Caretta caretta; laparoscopy; loggerhead sea turtle; radioimmunoassay; sex ratio; testosterone
TL;DR: Blood sampled from 1106 juvenile loggerhead sea turtles incidentally captured in pound nets set in Core and Pamlico Sounds, North Carolina showed that testosterone levels correctly identified males during summer months, but were unreliable during late autumn/winter months. Field anaesthesia of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea)

Veterinary Record, 161(1), 15–21.

By: C. Harms n, S. Eckert*, S. Kubis*, M. Campbell*, D. Levenson* & M. Crognale*

MeSH headings : Adrenergic alpha-Antagonists / administration & dosage; Anesthesia / veterinary; Anesthetics, Combined / administration & dosage; Anesthetics, Dissociative / administration & dosage; Anesthetics, Intravenous / administration & dosage; Animals; Drug Administration Schedule; Electroretinography / veterinary; Female; Heart Rate; Hypnotics and Sedatives / administration & dosage; Imidazoles / administration & dosage; Infusions, Intravenous / veterinary; Injections, Intramuscular / veterinary; Ketamine / administration & dosage; Medetomidine / administration & dosage; Turtles / physiology
TL;DR: The observed within-season return nesting rate of the anaesthetising turtles was comparable with that of unanaesthetised turtles, and the lower doses used initially were used initially to ensure against overdosage and reduce the chances of residual effects after the turtles returned to the water, but successful ergs called for step-wise dose increases to the required level of anaesthesia.
