2007 journal article

Is growth a reliable indicator of habitat quality and essential fish habitat for a juvenile estuarine fish?

CANADIAN JOURNAL OF FISHERIES AND AQUATIC SCIENCES, 64(4), 681–691.

TL;DR: The validity of growth as an index of habitat quality was tested by examining how variability in otolith growth was related to abiotic and biotic environmental conditions and could be biased by previous growth history, density dependence, and selective mortality. (via Semantic Scholar)

NORTH AMERICAN JOURNAL OF FISHERIES MANAGEMENT, 27(3), 773–781.

TL;DR: Three designs were investigated: tagging only the youngest available age-class, tagging the two youngest age-classes, and tagging the first five age- classes, assuming the same total number of tagged fish. (via Semantic Scholar)

Discard composition and release fate in the snapper and grouper commercial hook-and-line fishery in North Carolina, USA

Rudershausen, P. J., & Buckel, J. A. (2007, April). FISHERIES MANAGEMENT AND ECOLOGY, Vol. 14, pp. 103–113.

author keywords: barotrauma; commercial fishing; discard mortality; gut hooking
TL;DR: Although mortality based on post-release behaviour was relatively low, higher mortalities estimated from models incor- porating hooking location and depth of capture suggest that minimum size limits may not provide the population benefits intended by management in the North Carolina reef fishery. Density-dependent growth and mortality in an estuary-dependent fish: an experimental approach with juvenile spot Leiostomus xanthurus

MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES, 343, 251–262.

By: J. Craig n, J. Rice n, L. Crowder* & D. Nadeau*

author keywords: density-dependent growth; density-dependent mortality; spot; Leiostomus xanthurus; estuarine nursery; food limitation
TL;DR: The results provide strong experimental support for the hypothesis that density-dependent processes during the demersal marine fishes juvenile stage in estuaries can modify patterns in the abundance of spot, and perhaps other estuary-dependent species, that are established prior to settlement. Acute hypoxia-reperfusion triggers immunocompromise in Nile tilapia

JOURNAL OF AQUATIC ANIMAL HEALTH, 19(2), 128–140.

By: K. Choi n, D. Lehmann n, C. Harms n & J. Law n

MeSH headings : Animals; Aquaculture; Blood Chemical Analysis / veterinary; Blood Gas Analysis; Cichlids / blood; Cichlids / immunology; Cytokines / biosynthesis; Female; Hematologic Tests / veterinary; Hydrocortisone / blood; Hypoxia / blood; Hypoxia / immunology; Hypoxia / veterinary; Interleukin-1beta / biosynthesis; Male; Oxygen / pharmacology; Phagocytosis / drug effects; Reperfusion / veterinary; Time Factors; Transforming Growth Factor beta / biosynthesis
TL;DR: It is concluded that acute hypoxia triggered an overall downregulation of the immune system in the test fish, suggesting a possible factor in the pathogenesis of disease outbreaks in fish in which repeated, sublethal bouts of environmentally induced hypoxIA lead to increased disease susceptibility and individual mortalities rather than massive fish kills. Polychlorinated Biphenyl Exposure Causes Gonadal Atrophy and Oxidative Stress in Corbicula fluminea Clams

Toxicologic Pathology, 35(3), 356–365.

By: D. Lehmann n, J. Levine n & J. Law n

author keywords: PCB; polychlorinated biphenyl; oxidative stress; gonadal atrophy; Corbicula clams; Aroclor; antioxidant

TL;DR: It is indicated that oxidative mechanisms play a significant role in the decreased health of these clams due to exposure to Aroclor 1260, and changes in the gonads of exposed clams suggest that a serious threat to bivalve reproduction exists due to PCB exposure. (via Semantic Scholar)

CRUSTACEANA, 80(7), 779–792.

By: C. Linton, S. Rebach* & V. Kennedy

TL;DR: Differences in clam shell morphology and strength imply that softshell clams are more easily fed upon by blue crabs than are rangia clams, and size provides partial protection from blue crab predation. (via Semantic Scholar)
