Pilot comparison of outcome measures across chemical and surgical experimental models of chronic osteoarthritis in the rat (Rattus norvegicus)

PLOS ONE, 17(11).

By: M. Williams n, R. Meyers n, L. Braxton n, B. Diekman n & B. Lascelles n

Ed(s): A. Wijnen

MeSH headings : Rats; Animals; Rats, Sprague-Dawley; Lameness, Animal; Disease Models, Animal; Osteoarthritis / complications; Pain / complications; Models, Anatomic; Outcome Assessment, Health Care
TL;DR: The pilot data suggest both the ACL+DMM and MIA models are equal in terms of clinically relevant pain behaviors, but the MIA model is associated with more severe histological changes over time potentially making it more suitable for screening disease modifying agents. (via Semantic Scholar)

Identification of microbial taxa present in Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea) reveals widespread co-infection and associations with vector phylogeny

PARASITES & VECTORS, 15(1).

author keywords: Flea microbiome; Bartonella; Wolbachia; Rickettsia; Flea phylogenetics; Flea diversity; DNA barcoding; 16S NGS
MeSH headings : Animals; Cats; Bartonella / genetics; Cat Diseases / parasitology; Coinfection; Ctenocephalides / microbiology; Flea Infestations / epidemiology; Flea Infestations / veterinary; Phylogeny; Rickettsia / genetics
TL;DR: The findings confirm the widespread coinfection of fleas with multiple bacterial genera and strains, proposing three additional microbiome members and have important implications for flea-borne pathogen transmission and control. (via Semantic Scholar)

Implications of taxonomic bias for microbial differential-abundance analysis

McLaren, M. R., Nearing, J. T., Willis, A. D., Lloyd, K. G., & Callahan, B. J. (2022, August 19).

TL;DR: It is found that, for analyses based on species proportions, taxonomic bias can cause significant errors in DA results if the average measurement efficiency of the community is associated with the condition of interest, and these errors can be avoided by using more robust DA methods. Phylogeny-guided microbiome OTU-specific association test (POST)

MICROBIOME, 10(1).

author keywords: Association test; Phylogenetic tree; Kernel machine regression
MeSH headings : Computational Biology / methods; Computer Simulation; Female; Humans; Infant, Newborn; Microbiota / genetics; Phylogeny; Premature Birth
TL;DR: This work proposes a local collapsing test called phylogeny-guided microbiome OTU-specific association test (POST), and develops a user friendly R package POSTm, which can enhance the selection performance of associated microbiome features by improving the overall true-positive and false-positive detection. <p>Development of an ultrasound-guided transgluteal injection of the pudendal nerve in cats: a cadaveric study</p>

VETERINARY ANAESTHESIA AND ANALGESIA, 49(2), 189–196.

author keywords: feline; locoregional anesthesia; lower urinary tract disease; pudendal nerve block; ultrasound
MeSH headings : Animals; Cadaver; Cat Diseases; Cats; Nerve Block / methods; Nerve Block / veterinary; Prospective Studies; Pudendal Nerve / diagnostic imaging; Ultrasonography, Interventional / methods; Ultrasonography, Interventional / veterinary
TL;DR: In cats, ultrasound-guided cranial transgluteal injection successfully stained the pudendal nerve in at least 75% of attempts, regardless of injectate volume, and Group HV had a greater probability of sciatic nerve staining. (via Semantic Scholar)
