The resultant model uses quadratic basis functions and test functions that are modified by polynomials of cubic and quartic order, yielding a formulation that includes four PH parameters. The PG model was found to reduce the mean sum of square error of the solution compared to a conventional Bubnov‐Galerkin finite element solution by about a factor of 3 as the Courant number ( Cr ) approached one. Good results were also achieved with the PG method for problems that resulted in shock formation, which are typical of many applied problems of concern. PG parameters were found to depend strongly upon the Courant number and weakly upon the number of nodes in the system. Polynomial expressions were derived to approximate the PG parameters over the range 0 < Cr < 1. As the number of nodes in the system increased, a single‐parameter version of the model yielded solutions approaching the accuracy of the four‐parameter model. E. AU - Giesbrecht, F. G. AU - Mozingo, R. W. T2 - Peanut Science AB - Abstract Improvement of flavor quality is a breeding objective that merits increased attention. To obtain further information on broad-sense heritability of selected sensory attributes, 30 virginia-type genotypes sources were grown in replicated experiments at two locations during 1988 for evaluation. Roasted peanut paste samples were evaluated for 14 sensory attributes. Fruity attribute was confirmed as having a significant suppressive effect on roasted peanut attribute. Session-to-session variation was significant and use of an incomplete block design provided for control of panel variation in the experimental error. Broad-sense heritability estimates for roasted peanut, sweet, and nutty sensory attributes were higher than previously reported, 0.31 vs. 0.24; 0.68 vs. 0.14; 0.37 vs. 0.05, respectively. Nine genotypes were found to have statistically significant higher roasted peanut intensity than the industry accepted standard Florigiant. Further calculations showed that experiments with two replications at each of four locations should have an 80% chance of detecting statistical significance for roasted peanut attribute differences of 0.5 units among genotypes when testing at the 5% level. A similar experiment with two replications at two locations should have a 40% chance of detecting statistical significance. AU - Ritchie, D. F. AU - Carballo, S. J. AU - Blankenship, S. M. AU - Sanders, D. C. T2 - HortTechnology AB - A significant portion of harvested produce never reaches the consumer due to, postharvest diseases. Various chemicals have been used to reduce the incidence of postharvest diseases. Many of these materials have been removed from the market in recent years due to economic, environmental, or health concerns. Although somewhat limited in the range of diseases controlled, chlorination is effective when combined with proper postharvest handling practices. Additionally, it is a relatively inexpensive postharvest disease control method that poses little threat to health or the environment. The proper use of chlorination in the management of postharvest diseases in fresh fruits and vegetables is discussed. T2 - Applied Engineering in Agriculture AB - Many types of produce require thorough cooling immediately after harvest to minimize quality losses. In many instances, this is accomplished by forced-air cooling in a refrigerated room. This study was conducted to determine the applicability of residential air-conditioning equipment coupled to an insulated reusable container as a low-cost alternative to traditional room, forced-air cooling. A portable, forced-air precooler for single pallet loads of fresh fruits and vegetables was designed, constructed, and tested. The system utilized an inexpensive reusable cooling and shipping container coupled, during cooling, to a modified 10.38 kW (2.95 t) mobile home air-conditioning unit. Tests with various small fruit indicated acceptable cooling rates. At the completion of cooling, the insulated container provided several hours of protection for storage or transport.
